finally! I am a little disappointed that there will be no old version featured on DVD though, as I always liked the old ending of Ep 6 better than the special edition one. |

1. Yah well,... the LOTR parts just didn´t have to be `requested´ before all!
2. They could at least have left up the choice to the buyers/viewers by employing the `Seamless Branching´ technique and pack both versions (the already restored one, shortly released before the so-called `Special Edition´ flick and that one itself, both about the same quality, only the latter with those - awfully! - altered and additional scenes).
Curse on all those `artists´ and self-absorbed `geniuses´ with their oh so precious `visions´!
All in all - nothing i need nor want.
I´ll rather stick to the well conserved bought VHS tapes from `95/`96 my sister has (or even prefer my ancient, ancient recordings from TV ).

A lil off topic but..
In some ways, I kinda liked that Greedo fired first. It makes Han seem more like the cool headed gunfighter, you know? The new version is more of a credit to his character and ability than the old one. He stayed cool under pressure, waited for his shot and won - just like the good spagetti western gunfighters he's styled after. However, it certainly works to portray him as decidedly less "gray" (since he is more justified in firing this time around) and this is somewhat of a loss to be sure. The tranformation of Han Solo is a key theme throughout the Trilogy and its a shame to have that tampered with.
Anywho, as far as special editions go, SW:SE isnt bad. Some bits, such as the admittedly poorly rendered Jabba scene, actually work to make some characters more multi-faceted. Others do hurt it a bit. I rather liked the more bleak Mos Eisley portrayl in the original and was disappointed by the adding of all the gratuitous dewbacks and what not (did not fit the isolated frontier setting IMHO).
All in all, I'll be buying it. |
