Some darn good films you got on that list, Amelia. Have you also seen Kobayashi's "Harakiri" (or "Seppuku")?
Yes and I had debated putting that on there. I thought Samurai Rebellion was ultimately the better of the two although the mode of storytelling present in Harakiri is excellent. _________________ The real secret of magick is that the world is made of words. That's exactly how I feel about those two films.
I really want to see a trilogy of Kobayashi's called "Human Condition" based on novel(s) by Jumpei Gomikawa - I've heard nothing but great things about these films (~9 hours in total) and I looked for them on DVD, oh, maybe about a year ago. I get a little annoyed that "world cinema" DVDs are almost always so expensive (in this country, at least) - you pay twice as much for a poor print of a '50s film with no extras than you would for a month-old blockbuster packed with features. And more for the special editions Anyway, I couldn't find anywhere to buy Human Condition for less than £60-something (plus whatever overseas shipping would have cost, there were none in the UK) for all three, so I decided I'd wait and see if I could find a better deal.
Boy, am I kicking myself now. As far as I know, those are the only DVD editions of the films in existence, and everwhere I've looked proces and availability are pretty much the same. Now I'm just praying for Criterion or Eureka to come to the rescue |

Doesn't get much better than the Godfather series. _________________ "We'll go back in time to that mystic land
