Ramping up a new char?

What´s the best way to ramp up a new character in G2? I´m searching for a way to collect all obvious loot and boni without dying too often. Cleverness is okay, but no exploits please. Detailed tips are welcome.

Random thoughts in no particular order.

General gameplay thoughts:

The easiest way is to talk to everyone...EVERYONE and do simple quests to build experience.

Collect EVERYTHING!

When a quest takes you to another area, try to find an escort.

When you are outside a safe area(try not to be early on), turn on your "radar" which means mounting a ranged weapon. Then you can see the baddies before they see you.

Search every inch of the game as you play thru.

Refer to your quest log often, and save save save. Save before you talk to someone or enter a battle....and save in different slots.

When you decide to fight a creature, lure them out of the pack one by one....and save after each win.

Spend your first skill points on strength ONLY to at least 40.(Some will disagree. If you want to be a ranger your primary training will be dex, BUT I still think you need the strength to fall back on if things turn bad. It's a preference, not law.)

Use the right weapon for the right foe. You can be hercules and get cut down by goblins if you use a sword. A bow is much better against them, giant rats, bloodflies, and molerats.

Avoid wargs, shadowbeasts, orc elite, and dragon snappers at all cost....until you can biatch slap orcs around.

Wait for the foes attack, don't just swing wildly. Stand your ground and time your swing(s). Early on I do best against orcs by blocking their first blows and countering, step back, block, counter.....but you can't block against creatures. You
can back them off if you get in the first good hit, wait, then hit again when they are close enough.

Try to learn basic animal skinning when you have the LP's.....but before you start trying to kill all the creatures. Skins/teeth etc. can add to your $$$ quickly. You just did the work killing the beast, why not get paid?

Read any book you find or see. That is good advice in life also

If your health is low, try to find a place to sleep instead of using herbs or potions. Sleep is free, and there is no max number of days to do the game.

Remember the immortal words of Gorn from Gothic 1......know what is behind you. You don't want to leave a creature that later attacks you from behind while you are fighting another baddie. It is not good for your health....or nerves.

I will give specific areas and play later.

Searching around Xardas' tower at the first of the game should be simple enough, Look everywhere, find a coupla switches, collect everything....nuff said.

Leave the tower, face it, and there is a hidden area to the back right. There are two ways to get there. Climb the rocks on the right, or look up the tower on the right side.....you will see a way to get down to the area from the top. Grab the loot. Go to the other side of the tower, WALK so you do fall off the cliff and gather all the herbs.

Head down the path past the sheep, do not kill the sheep you brutish half-orc! Gather the loot at the stump. Mount a weapon and kill the pesky goblin just past the sheep/stump on your left. Go to the water, then left. You'll find a bow and some arrows. Back to the path and proceed towards town. (there is a cave opposite where you find the bow....don't even dream of going there yet.) Next kill the young wolf, search the area blah blah blah. Try to remember to turn on your radar wherever you go. Next you will find a bandit....it is your first great opportunity to die a horrid death. If you read my first post in this thread....does SAVE ring a bell? You should already have at least 2 saves before you even see the bandit on radar. DO NOT ENTER THE BANDIT CAVE!!

Above the bandit cave is another hidden area. You can go have a look if you wish, but do NOT challenge the lizards. Kill the meatbugs, grab the scroll, pick the herbs, and go back to the path to town.

Do the quests at the first farm you come to....turn right at the statue of Innos. Talk to the sheepherder. One quick note here: You can easily miss experience points killing a wolf. After you talk to the dude guarding the sheep(he is very near the statue), as soon as you end the conversation, draw your weapon and run back towards the statue...a wolf will have spawned. If you are lazy let the sheepherder do all but the final blow, then you get the experience points

Gather herbs around the farm, talk to everyone, do the turnip and frying pan quest etc. But don't get conned into buying the letter from Canthar...he is the merchant that sells you the frying pan. And don't try and steal the farmers clothing, make a deal with Lobart for the clothes. What are you thinking??? You have wanted to kill an innocent sheep, now you want to steal clothes!!! The game just started....slooooow down you brutish half-orc! We do that later

At the farm there is a stonehenge looking stone circle. Make note of it and head back down the path to the city. You "can" try and kill the field raiders near it, but you WILL bleed heavily at this stage in the game....just look and move on.

Now come the important part.........have you learned a dam thing from my 2 posts so far........how many saves do you have? OHHHHHH you forgot to save before you talked to someone, or entered a battle. Keep that laziness up and you will find yourself 2 hours into the game when you die without a recent save. It will happen, and here is my response....BAHAHAHAHA!!!!!....I hope it burns into your memory and soul, never to be repeated.

If you have paid attention, you might have noticed that I did NOT say to kill the bloodlfies near the Innos statue, nor the wolves on the left of the path, nor the fieldraiders. Your goal at this point should be to get to town without bleeding profusely. Leave the creatures alone for now, and ONLY engage them if absolutley neccessary. Reason: they ain't going anywhere, and we want not only the experience, but the loot from their hides/teeth/wings/stingers etc. Jesus, why is it so hard to keep you from wanting to kill and steal everything you see!!! Did you just get out of prison??....ooops, my bad....you DID just get out of prison, but stop thinking like a thug for now! Just put on your BOUGHT farmers clothes and go to the town. Dam brutish half-orc

Once you reach the guards to the city, you can turn right and pick up a few goodies, but if you go to far you will have to kill a couple of giant rats. Since your radar is on, just stop short, turn back, and enter the city.

Once in the city you have several hours of play talking and doing small quests. Don't sweat it if you can't complete a quest right now....just talk to everyone and get all the quests into your log that you can get. DO NOT JOIN A GUILD! DO NOT beome an apprentice! (except for the thieves guild, which won't hurt your game, but you probably can't do it anyway.) DO NOT SPEND ANY POINTS YET! Just talk and do small quests....stay in the city. I know I know....you are a young stud wanting to conquer the world, but you are an unbelievably weak wimp....stay in the school yard and don't pick fights with upperclassmen..........ok? You dam brutish half-orc...chill out.

All of the city quests have been covered ad nauseum elsewhere on the forum, so I won't repeat it in this post. But to appease your wild half-orc spirit, lets go steal some leather armor When you first entered the city gates there is a guard in a small alley doing what he does best...guarding something....ummmm, that why they call him a guard If you go around the back of the building on his left.....not that way moron....HIS LEFT! geez! You can climb the wall, jump onto the roof of the building, drop down and loot the chests and come back out the same way. Nice leather armor for free and you feel better because you soothed your thuggish needs. Happy now?

Gorath said exploits were ok, so here is an oldie but goodie. If you need into a forbidden area you can strafe past the guards and go about your merry way....but remember to strafe back out again. You can also draw your weapon and run past them, then sheathe your weapon once well inside.

Wow, I feel like I am playing mental Gothic2

At this point you should have numerous saves, several LP's to spend, a logbook full of quests(several complete), and a total bodycount of 3 wolves, 2 meatbugs, and a goblin.......and your blood has not been flowing like Niagara Falls. AH HA! You dam brutish half-orc, you killed more than that did'nt you....fess up. If you had turned on your radar you could have avoided the other kills and gotten animal trophies from them later...so NAH! Ok ok, I'll let you slide on a couple of bloodflies on the path from Canthar to town. Maybe you did'nt know to stay to the right and RUN past them before they activate....and now you are almost/out of arrows. Ummmm, you DID at least use the right weapon against the bloodflies....right? Ok, then remember to buy some arrows before you leave town.

Did you complete ALL the possible quest in town? NO! Then why are you approaching the gate? And where is your escort? Don't look at me like "what escort"? Some of the quests have people take you to other areas....they kill stuff, you get the experience. I'm beginning to wonder if you can think like a normal human now. Maybe you are brutish full-orc dressed in leather armor

Stop wasting time and go talk to Lares.

Someone else can take it for here for a while. My brain hurts and my beer is low

Thanks so far.
Low on beer? That´s a serious problem. You should do something against it.

I would recomend practicing how to parry enemy blows, it only works against humans orcs and other monsters thet carry weapons, but if they can't hit you because you block all there attacks then you won't bleed alot.

When fighting wolfs, wargs, snappers and other such creatures let them come to you then as they try to bite you press the down arrow to move back, they will miss there attack and leave themselves open for a quick and combo attack then hop back again and let them come to you, this works best with 1handed weapons becase they are a lot faster to swing.

Finally when fighting orcs and lizard men as they are charging you strafe round them to the right they will swing there axe and miss completely and then will have there back to you, then move in for the kill.

Oh, I forgot one good tip. If you have gin and moleratfat in your inventory, "arm" them like you would any weapon in slot 1 and 2(you have to unarm your sword and bow, arm the two items in the correct slots, then re-arm your sword and bow as normal). It will seem like nothing changed, but you have actually mounted a "drunken sword" and the infamous "greasy arrow", both go through ANY armor for 15 minutes. It will show you have your sword and bow armed...don't sweat it Just use your weak sword and bow with confidence! Nothing stops the drunken sword or greasy arrow You will lose one gin and one moleratfat from inventory, but it IS worth it.

Now you can defeat orc elite from ANY level, with any sword or bow. It is not a cheat Gorath....it is a bug

I would like to have very specific infos - and please make it short because I have to rephrase it anyway.

Where to find good weapons? How to get XP without risk? For example:

- Climb over the wall to the city and talk to Lares to get 500 XP.

How many secret areas are between Xardas´ tower and the first bandit? I counted 5:
1. switch at the carmine, 2. jumping down & behind the tower, 3. bow and scrolls under a tree at the lake, 4. gold behind the 2 goblins and 5. scrolls across the mountain behind the goblins.

- On top of the highest pyramids: Orc Slayer (everybody knows that, but for newbies)
- In the cave near the pyramids: Ring of Invincibility. The Stone Golems on the way back can be taken down by running straight to them and chopping them with left-right combination. They won't have them to come to life completely and can't attack you.

-You can steal quite a lot from the barracks at night, especially once you have lockpicking. If Wulgar catches you, reload and try exiting through the door farthest from him. The tower key in the chest is for the tower behind Pablo; there's a Fine Short Sword inside.

-You can get onto the paladin ship by climbing the right arm of the crane and jumping. You need to stay about 10 feet away from each guard to avoid being caught. There's a potion of +5 strength, a ring of stone skin, and some other potions as well as loot.

-Do Ignaz's experiment on Valentino, which will get you 200GP and a key plus XP.

-Use the proceeds from your larceny to donate 1000GP to Daron the firemage in 50GP increments. This will get you 85 bonus hitpoints, +2 mana and 1 LP.

-Talk to Regis about Valentino. He will give you a ring of +5 protection against weapons. Talk to Coragon in the tavern and give him the ring for 300XP, then buy it back for 100GP.

-Steal leather armor as discussed here: http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=28298

-Talk to Wulgar at the barracks around 5am for a free 2% increase in 1-handed weapon skill.

-if you're really good at fighting(or avoiding monsters) you can go up the road near akils farm beneath the bridge and get a wold tooth sword.
-you can either warn the bandit you meet in the begining or kill him the thing is it affects the farm cloths(30gp kill all three, 40 gp if you kill only two and warn the third), so you can warn him and then you can kill him getting xp from both actions and a better price on the togs.
-greg the pirate in notr can only get in the city using the farmer clothes so be ready to give them up with you want to help him.
-collect any epee you come across they are worth 75gp each
-as a fire mage you can get on the ship on the first chapter just talk to the guards.
-collect every scroll you can find a buy some more, at low lvls scrolls are amazingly effective since even rain of fire cost only 5 mana.

-When hunting with Bartok, go all the way through the woods and SAVE every time you encounter a new critter.

*Try to get as many FireBall and FireArrow spell scrolls you can but dont use them yet, I'll explain later.

*Be sure you can skin animals before you head out.

You will run into Bloodflies (easiest prey you will meet), and a rather large pack of wolves (Be careful, let Bartok attract the wolves so they dont all come after you). If you choose to keep going you will run into a Shadowbeast and here's my advice on that battle:

The Shadowbeast should actually defeat you and Bartok quite easily but it is possible to defeat it. Let Bartok attack first and pray that it gets stuck running into a tree or something. If that doesnt happen, use all the Fireball and Fire Arrow scrolls you stocked up on while Bartok takes the damage and pray that he doesnt die. If I remember correctly you will only be able to use fireball once before you're out of mana, so keep the inventory ready to use mana potions or regenerating plants.

Use the combination of fireball, potion (or plant), fireball, potion.

If Bartok dies, reload a saved game.

Once you have defeated the Shadowbeast, you will have one last enemy: The Orc Scout. He is easier to defeat than the Shadowbeast, as you can parry his attacks. Again, let Bartok initiate battle and then get around the Orc and hit him repeatedly from behind and he should go down quickly.

Loot the Orc's weapon and you can solve the quest from the Smith in the city (forget his name)

Loot the hides from the wolves and you can solve the hides quest from Bosper

Not to mention now the woods are a safer place for all and you just netted probably a level's worth of exp

About Bartok:

After you have killed the orc, let Bartok go on toward the end of the ravine. He will stop and wait for you.......that is a good thing

While he waits you can lure other enemies to him and get the experience. Imeddiately after killing the orc, do a save. Let Bartok go, but don't follow.....go wide to the right and make your way to the end of the ravine. You'll find a hoard of black goblins......get them to chase you back to Bartok. Don't bother helping since his bow will take them out quickly. Just run wide circle around Bartok, but try not to activate his final dialog(where he says it is too dangerous and he is going back to town). If you activate this dialog, reload the save and try again.

After killing all the black goblins, save, then go through the pass leading to the bandits. Lure them back one by one to Bartok....remember to run wide around Bartok to avoid activating the last dialog. Rinse and repeat until all the bandits are dead. Save after each successful kill.

Now you can lure the snappers back to Bartok...one by one please. The snappers are next to the wall of Khorinis, to the left of the entrance gate.

The bandits are the hardest to lure successfully, and you can lure any of these enemies in any order. Not activating the last dialog is the hardest part lol. If you get too close, the dialog WILL start.....even if an enemy is kicking your butt at the time.

After you have lured/killed everything you can go back and collect various herbs and loot.....it is quite likely you will not be able to loot many of the bodies because they will die close to Bartok. But you can get alot of stuff laying around.

After you're done hunting with Bartok, repeat Ingaz's experiment on him!

Chances are good that he got banged up enough from the Shadowbeast and Orc that he's not at full health any more. A couple of arrows to drop his health (if needed), then finish him off with your sword. Loot him and cast the spell of forgetfullness.

You'll come away with an apple, a good knife and the best bow you can get your hands on at this point in the game. Of course, your Dex may not be high enough to use it yet.

Just an FYI. The last time I played through the game, I found that it's quite possible to get through the early part of the game putting most of your LP's into Dex. This increases your ability to use good Bow's to kill the monsters from a distance. This of course, increases your ability to get exp, meat, and trophies without taking damage.

Just make sure that when Lares shows you the way to Onar's Farm, you take a little detour to the dead end canyon near Dexter's tower that has the two Trolls at the back. Save your game first, then run all the way to the back, grab the Rapier, then run back out! You now have an excellent Dex based melee weapon for the early part of the game! You can come back for the Trolls when you feel up to it!

If the Trolls used you for a punching bag, reload that save and try again!
