One for Val--you might appreciate the lyrics. It might be rough enough to keep the rest of y'all awake too.

I saw this tucked in an email from my favorite shoegaze mailorder site and had a laugh. Then, I decided I ought to listen to it for Sammy. With a band name like that, it's gotta be fertile ground for his sturm und drang penchant. So I found a clip, and wonder of wonders, the music ain't all that bad. Might be of interest to many of you here.

Ether Aura - Hardly Know You
Finally coughed up the bucks for this one. Well worth the price paid. I'd say the three tracks over at Myspace are among the best, but there really aren't any dogs on the disc. A couple tracks push the bouncy pop barrier a little more than I favor, but not so much as to make them skip-able. There's at least one other track that should have made Myspace as standouts. I'd say the overall tone of the disc would be a little too "happy" for Sammy, but probably would suit Ms. Val reasonably well.

Add in the handwritten personalized note from the label owner (I'm such a sucker for that sort of thing) and you've got all the makings of a satisfying music experience.

Paradise Lost - Gothic

http://www.paradiselost.co.uk/releaseinfo.php?id=2

The last of the UK doom triumverate, My Dying Bride, Anathema, and finally I try out Paradise Lost. I love MDB and Paradise Lost is great too, but Anathema has yet to grow on me. MDB is more tragedy, death, romance, abstract to the point of absurdity at times, but it works out in the end. Paradise Lost is death, of the individual and of all mankind, the Day of Judgement, infinity, all that good stuff.

Anathema, they just sound like theyre moaning and groaning about how depressed they are, havent been able to get into them. At least MDB have an excuse, the pretense of lost love, betrayal, or just hatred. Paradise Lost have an obsession with yet intense fear of death and the vastness of time, space, infinity, and the futility of the micro-organism known as man. Plus they wrap their whole sound with that watery gothic guitar and bass stylings reminiscent at times of Bauhaus and the like, and they throw some hauntingly beautiful female vox once and awhile and lots of painful echo really rounds it out. Nice double bass too. That first song on "Gothic" is unnerving, I tend to like music that kinda scares me at times. Why am I typing this? I ask myself that all the time, and I always get the same answer - because I feel like it!

But all that is in the past, the history of these bands is the best part, so you need to buy cds ten years in the grave to actually hear them when theyre good. Like all good bands of this genre, they end up unfortunately cheering up, and start having a little too much fun with the keyboard and drum machine. Theatre of Tragedy, Anathema, Paradise Lost, all these old masters of doom and gloom are now bopping around the dance floor, it sucks. I dont even want to heart Tristania's next one..

At least My Dying Bride only made one foray into electronic, then they went back to making the music that made them who they are in the first place.
