The Dot is Back!! But What was it??? |
|
I am sooo glad to see all is running again. I have to ask, was it a hack or a mess up? And I hope not too bad of a hack if it was.
If that is what happened I hope you can find out who and beat them to a pulp. Idiots that do that stuff should have to eat their own HD's.
Anyway, glad you got it up and running again. Thanks for what I know was a lot of hard work. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

We weren't the only one hit. Duck & Cover, RPG Codex, and more were hit. Bloodlines Dilapidation forums were completely deleted. I hope Dan had a backup over there or all their hard work on stuff like bug reports and such are toast.
It looks like a lot of community style sites that use PHPBB/PHPNuke were hit and exploited.
We'll have a lot of help skinning the culprit alive. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Sad, but in a way good I guess. At least with that many getting hit it makes it a crime that authorities will spend more time and effort on. Is there anyway to tell if our email addresses were accessed?
Giving it out is not a problem, that is the risk of going online, but if they did, we can all know to be extra careful for the time being. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

I have no idea. I know from posts on RPG Codex that Rend went through expensive lengths to get things up and running again.
I'd suggest being careful as you always should be.
Here's what Rend posted on RPG Codex:

Here's Rendelius from RPGDot.com.
I don't yet know how hard we have been hit. The server is down and refuses to boot. Can't say if they wiped our databases or not, but we have at least a complete backup on that server. It could well be that the sites and the settings are lost, we'll have to wait and see. Now I have to buy expensive remote keyboard and mouse access to the server to let a specialist see what can be done.
I'll keep you updated.

Good news: We have a complete backup of all sites on a second server. The backup is less than a week old.
Bad news: we are still struggling to get the sites alive again.
You're our hero, Rend! _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Well, not much of a hero, given the fact that I am lost when it comes to technical problems. The heroes are the guys from easyservermanagement.com - they went great lenghts to bring the shell alive, and they did A LOT more than they were paid for. The other heroes are those guys from Jolt - they took over from there and brought this thing back alive within 5 hours.
What was it exactly? The hackers used an exploit in the forum (one that WE could have closed, our phpbb was a little bit outdated) and messed up with the file system and stuff. It was so bad that after a reboot, the server stopped before a single system was running. The only chance to fix it was to use a virtual device for keyboard and mouse that lets you sit in front of your server, literally (and the server is thousands of miles away from where I am or Jolt is). With this system, we found a way to restart SSH (the secure shell). From there on, it was repair time for Jolt, and they were fast and so helpful.
Good thing out of all of this is that we will move to the Jolt server within days now. We will be safer there _________________ Rendelius

We are running from the new server now. Some subsites might need some time to get the DNS transfered, but everything should be done in a day or so.
Sending mail notifications (when sending a PM and when you have e-mail notification on forums enabled) appears not to be working for the forums at the moment. We are working on that. _________________ Kewl quotes:

As Corwin said, you guys do a great job. And we do appreciate it. Now just let us know when we can draw and quarter the ones behind this and we will be there. _________________ =Member of the Nonflamers Guild=

Cool, I'm glad things are up and running and looking normal. Well, as normal as they get. The little Fable guy looks happy to be back ='.'=
Did anyone happen to translate the monkey page? I know some Spanish, I do live in Mexifornia you know, but not enough to be able to translate with any type of proficiency. I know like all the cuss words, food, and construction industry terms. Oh and "suave", you know, the whole Rico thing taught me that one. But all that I was able to take away from the lengthy piece, statistics and sociological theory about crime relating to firearms south of the border I think, or something to that extent?
Anyone happen to know just what the heck the loco-weed banditos were trying to say ?? I'd think that if they went to all the trouble, it would at least be something important. _________________ “Then away out in the woods I heard that kind of a sound that a ghost makes when it wants to tell about something that's on its mind and can't make itself understood, and so can't rest easy in its grave, and has to go about that way every night grieving.”-Mark Twain |

Very nice the site is back online again!
I think it was portuguese, I saw Rio mentioned somewhere, so it may have been Brasilians. _________________

This type of hacking is something I'm really not able to understand.
Glad that you were able to get back so soon. |
