Skinning Woes

Alright, I'm a bit frustrated.

I've been attempting to reskin some of the existing models in Morrowind according to Kathykitten's tutorial (http://www.angelfire.com/wizard/kathykitten/skin_tut.rtf), and can't seem to get the item to load in the TES Editor.

Here's the rundown on what I'm doing, see if you can help me out.

1. Copy the .nif file of the model I want to reskin and rename it.
2. Open the .nif file in Hex Workshop and replace the file name with the new name, and replace the texture names with the names of the new skins.
3. Create the new texture bitmaps and name them according to step 2.
4. Open up TESCS, create a new item using the new .nif file, choose an icon, set its values and enchantment properties accordingly, and then place the item somewhere in the world.

My problem is that at step 4, TESCS hangs up whenever I try and place the item somewhere in the world. I'm assuming I'm missing some critical step, probably in the hex editing stages, but I've followed what others have done to the letter, and can't figure out what I'm doing wrong.

If anyone knows a possible solution, or would like to check out some of my .nif files, please either reply to this post or email me at glass@evil1.com. Any and all help is appreciated.
