Let me say I'm basically a non-violent person (surprise, surprise) unless of course you're playing NWN with me on the server!! I still prefer education over retaliation, though I couldn't help but cheer for Val defending those being bullied.

I was bullied once by a bigger, older boy and I told my father. He went straight over to the bullies father and confronted him. Needless to say, the bully got severely dealt with by his father and never came near me again. My point is still that parents need to take a measure of responsibility in all this. Teachers can't, against the law. Most school admins won't for all the reasons Val stated. The legal system everywhere is a joke. That only leaves parents to discipline THEIR children. Why don't they? That's another topic I think!!

You elected to emphasize the part that supports your arguement without emphasizing the point I was making.

quote:
I felt no pride and no relief over this. Evening the odds, such as your example, is humiliating ... it makes you feel powerless (even if you are powerless you don't like to be reminded of it)

The single most devastating thing about being a victim is a feeling of shame. It was bad enough losing but I cannot begin to imagine how much worse I would have felt to have a person in a position of authority tell me I could not win and needed help.

Actually, I can imagine it. The total destruction of self-image a boy would suffer at being told they couldn't fight their own battles would be complete... especially if it was done in front of girls.

There's a reason that even men drastically overpowered will have to be dragged away from a fight, wrestling against the 'interlopers' and screaming to be released. I have no idea what that reason is ... but since the response is instinctual and universal it has to have a root.

Having a teacher even the odds, as in your example... being told you were too weak to defend yourself... there's no way 'little Xen' could have possibly ever looked back on that with anything but shame. You were a boy once --. would you honestly have been grateful at the need to be defended by a girl ... or would you be as humiliated as the bully who was subsequently beaten by her? I can't imagine it's the minority who would feel humiliated.

Violence and bullying must be eliminated in schools... not mediated. I am not advocating letting the little guy keep getting the crap kicked out of him ... nobody deserves that. I am saying that any attempt at adding structure to it would likely be as damaging to the victim as doing nothing at all. A zero tolerance policy and teachers who pay attention and give a damn are what's needed. The problem with zero tolerance, though, is that if you expel a child they could easily just grow up to be uneducated and violent adults. This thinking is what has led to the impotence of disciplinary action of minors.

Personally, I think you should just kill them. It's not like there's a shortage. I also think you should kill thieves, murderers, rapists, arsonists ... pretty much everyone who commits a crime and is found guilty beyond reasonable doubt. If the system fails and you kill a few innocent in the process then so be it. I am 100% certain there are far more guilty people in prison than innocent.
