Need advice regarding approach to areas full of NPCs in RPGs

I am thinking back to when I played Planescape Torment (never did finish):

and I remember that whenever I came across a new crowded npc area I just thought "Ugh... now I have to run up to 50 npcs and read through 150 paragraphs of stuff that I won't remember well"...

Certainly I like the idea of finding new vendors, but does anyone have some tips for me to get more enjoyment out of this situation? Planescape was the worst for 'dialog overload'. I didn't see this as much of a problem in BG.

Just look for the people who stand out.

e.g:

Non-generic names
Non-generic NPC appearance

Usualy works most of the time. Definately worked in P:T.

Yes, I agree with Chekote. There is a lot RPGs out there, that make it even more straightforward. Nearly all named NPCs are important other NPCs are "not named" (something like citizen, worker...).

On other hand if you have smth like "sleeping worker" or "angry villager" in description maybe you should pay attention to this one, too Several times I managed to wake one up and calm another down

Well if that was the only sleepy/angry worker in an area then that would be classed as a Non-Generic name.

True. But consider situations when you have several non-generic characters and *any* of those may say smth of importance to you. Like several imprisoned peasants begging for help. Talking to anyone will give you a quest.

Yes that is true. But that is the exception. Mostly they just say all the same stuff.

Generaly if you want to find all the little side quests, then you should be talking to every single person anyway. Obviously if you just want to talk to main characters then all you are interested in is the main storyline.
