Need some Gothic 2 advice

Hi all gothic 2 is a great game but i need some advice

Ok, im level 5, very nearly level 6 and im in the Khornis militia. I have the basic militia armour wich u get given to you and i hae 30% sword skill (fighter) and 35 srenght or there abouts. i have a damage 35 sword because im intent on being a good melee character with a bow. i have'nt yet spent any points on the bow. I have to get prooth about the army of darkness but since i can only fight an orc if i get very lucky im guessing i should give it some time before i go. what level should i get to before going to the old colony mines to see the Paladin commander? also, do you have any tips and advice for me?
