Also I read somewhere that there was an option reenabled in the .ini
related to some sky texturing problems. Is this related to the sky texture
banding that you get when enabling anisotropic ?

Here are two small paragraphs from the review. Still work in progress.



NPCs & atmosphere
The reasons why many Gothic fans prefered Gothic over Gothic 2, despite the latter´s clearly better quests and pace, were the slightly better story, the more fleshed out setting and the more charismatic NPCs. TNotR addresses all of this, it´s closer to the original than to the successor.
Many NPCs from the Old Camp and the New Camp are back, including the water mages, Cavalorn and Thorus. The new NPCs are generally of higher quality than those from Gothic 2. Some NPCs you remember as somewhat shallow have more depth now because they are used for quests or have additional dialogs.
The story is relatively down to earth for a fantasy RPG. You´re dealing with humans instead of demons. Together with the improved NPCs this has a positive effect on the atmosphere. The add-on feels more gloomy and more relaxed at the same time.


Conclusion
TNotR is an excellent expansion. It offers about 30 hours of new content, woven into a completely overhauled Gothic 2. The add-on successfully combines the strongest features of both Gothics to create a deep and challenging RPG experience.
This alone is enough to make it the best Gothic so far. As a bonus you get an improved original game with better balancing, new character development system and tied loose ends.
The only real downside -which might even be a plus for a hardcore RPGer- is the high difficulty. Newbies should play Gothic 2 as a mage before they install TNotR.

probibly a bad translation, and is mud really a zombie or is he a person like he was in gothic? either way gothic2 notr looks like an amazing game

He is realy a zombie.
I dont know if you still know bloodwine, but he is also a zombie.
I dont think mud or bloodwine will say anything to you, just mindless zombies trying to kill you.

Yes! This is exactly the sort of "neutral/nonchalant" tone that drew me to Gothic initially. Some of that spirit was in G2, but I beleive a portion of it was diluted by the clear good versus evil conflict at G2's core. I am happy to hear that some of that feeling will be returning for the expansion.

G1 was riveting without having such a heavy-handed/epic plot. It was simply about trying find your place in a society, and later freeing yourself from imprisonment. Along the way you did run into evil / fantastical elements, and there are hints of a larger scheme that may be at work. But still there was always a sense of grouding. A sort of "down home" gritiness. You felt that the inhabitants of this world were real people that you could hang with. That they weren't just some fantasy role-playing archetypes with no context or point-of-reference in the "real" world.

Also I agree with elkston it was the mature(and I dont mean adult )
taste that G1 had (set in a prison environment, forced to make choises of
principle-character and manouvre in the midst of waring factions,drawn by the
will to survive and set yourself free rather than "set forth to vanquish all evil")
that drew me to this game (along ofcourse with the excellent mood and story
telling approach).

Heh,also I remember my first post to these forums was to ask how the story
and quality of the Npcs of G2 compares to G1. So it is very good to see that
NOTR signals a return to the old ways (though Gorath already gave us a hint
about this in the past).

yup yup Gorath i totally agree with u G2 had not that kind of atmosphere like G1 had but after i played G2 with the addon they were both the same again

u mean that bloodraven who picked every day protection money from you in G1 ? well got a little surprise he aint a zombie he is pure human in the game and u can settle down with him some old business also later . I think the zombies just look like mud and bloodraven but they aint them
