Question regarding traning for novices

I've a question regarding novices and their training. I know it's advised to go with dexterity and dex-based swords as a fire magician, but I feel it's more in-character for them to go with strength and two-handers (the monastery has trainers for strength and two-handers, and you are given a two-handed staff when joining them). As you know, increasing strength and weaponskills when guildless costs but 1LP each. However, when becoming a novice, either strength or weaponskills start costing 2LP instead. My question is; which? I'll need to increase the skill that'll double in cost when becoming a novice before joining them.

Thanks.

Actually, it's both Dex and Str, plus all weapons skills double. Mana and some other misc. skills don't change, though.

Since, as a Mage, you will rely more and more on your spells, you only need to get your favorite hand weapon and missle weapon skills up to 30% before becoming a Mage. You can increase Dex and Str with potions rather than LPs, too.

I assume you're playing gothic 2 classic (the reference about skill costs reveals this). In any case I wouldn't trouble myself with the melee skills much. Frankly when you are admitted to the 3:rd or 4:th circle and get your hands on the summon skeleton, large fireball and lightining strike runes, you are an unbeatable killing machine. Naturally assuming that you have been boosting your mana since the day one, like a true chosen of innos should be .

To clarify:

In Gothic II classic, either strength or weaponskills started costing twice as much when you became a novice, then when becoming a fire magician *both* cost twice as much. Is this the case in Der Nacht des Raben as well? Or does it stick with 10-30: 1LP each, 30-60: 2LP each, 60+: 3LP each even for novices and fire magicians training the warrior skills?

That's correct. In NotR you just have the LP progression 1=10-30, 2=31-60, 3=61-90, etc. for combat skills and attributes. You don't get any additional penalty to learning based on your guild.

Fortunately in NotR you also get the stone tablets to help you get your skills/attributes up after they become really expensive. Also, making Strength, Dex and Mana potions becomes more important in NotR due to the cost escalation.
