Am I they only one who finds Gothic's controls to be absolutly amazing? Why is it so hard for people to use the keyboard? Wasn't Doom strictly keyboard? Never heard anyone complain about that game. Also, anyone ever play the alone in the darks? That game was controled by the arrow keys as well and I thought it kicked ass. Can't you fools deal without using your precious mouse for once? All this talk about bad controls is really starting to piss me off. If you can't take 15 mintues to learn how to control your character, then bring the game back and buy a copy of Diablo2. |

keyboard control is in most cases much faster than mouse control - think of Wizardry 5-7, Ultima 4-6, Doom, ...
5 min learning and that's it, maybe it is a bit easier for us 'veteran' gamers.
i have played Gothic with keyboard controls only and worked perfectly.

I played Gothic with mouse as other games and I was satisfied.

Yep, Diablo2 was great game. I already have it, any other advice?

The crux is PB made a terrible mistake not documenting the controls properly in the German manual. Then they repeated it in the English version.
They shouldnīt have expected the player to find out all the details of the control system for themselves. Communication rulez! |

Diablo 2 was fun until one of my friends hacked up some etherial uniques and put Zods into them on Closed Battle.net
Also, I, as a lefty found the controls quite simple to master.

Here:
(For left handed players we suggest the Standart-Keyboard-Layout and for right - handed players the Alternative-Keyboard-Layout)
Movement
left-handed
right-handed
Movement forward and backward
POS1 and END
W and S
Strafe left / right
DEL und PAGE DOWN
A and D
Turn left / right
Insert and PAGE UP
Q and E
Inventory
BACKSPACE
TAB
Sneak (if talent learned)
X-Key (NumBlock)
X
Turn Head only
INSERT and DEL (NumBlock)
F and R
The left mousebutton is the alternative to the ACTION-Key and the right mousebutton for JUMP/STRAFE. This gives the following opportunities:
Action
Key
Example
use object in focus
left Mousebutton and Up-Key
talk to person, use switch...
Objekt in the Inventory etc
left Mousebutton and Up-Key
use/equip
left Mousebutton and Down-Key
drop
left Mousebutton and left/right
Transfer an object
Jump and Climb
right Mousebutton and Up-Key
Fight: Hit and Combos
Left Mousebutton and Up-Key
Hit, shoot, use Mana
Left Mousebutton and left/right
A blow to the side (combo)
left Mousebutton and Down-Key
Parry
Use the mouse to scroll through the Inventory, Dialoge, Menu and Diary. Use the left Mousebutton to choose and the right Mousebutton to discard. If your Mouse comes with a wheel use it to scroll through the answers, the inventory, ...

I love the game, hate the controls. Worst EVER!
BTW, I still recomend the game to everyone on my forum. Good game, very bad interface.

a: the controls are extremely easy to get use to, infact, now that ive got use to them? i prefer them to the tomb raider ones, or any other 3rd person rpg.
b:register.

OK, maybe not "worst ever" but close to. I do like to play games and for me this is not the "Go to return" point. But still, why to use this combination in RPG?
Tell me good reason to register. I am visiting this forum for long time and post just a few messages. 3 or 4 to be correct. And, I like to help people with problems, (all my posts was about hardware before this one). But, after reading the forum threads about the control issues, I felt to put my 2 cents to the open. BTW, I never played Tomb Rider (except demo of the first one), so no comment on that one. You have to know, I am 53 years old and have allready the "Old fart" syndrom. This mean, I DO HAVE a problem in fast responses. And coordination. And so on.
Still. I am hard core gamer. I will put with all this s##t and finish the game. Not the "weekend player" one. They will return the game and this is what I hate. Such a good game! If you read all the reviews, you will know what I am talking about. That was my point, regadless if I register or not.

How about letting the user configure the controls to his/her liking? Standard controls, like you see in FPS, would work fine for a game like this. Move with the right mouse, attack with the left. Arrow keys to move a player? Forget it! |

I donīt know what shooters you play, but in those I have the standard controls are cursor for running, LMB primary fire, RMB secondary fire. Gothicīs interface is pretty close to this. |

Yes, Gorath is right. I play FPS alot and Gothic is similar to them. Very similar. Yes there are somecombinations that are not in FPS, but that is because you do not do such things in FPS.

Here's a different problem. The documentation is so sparse that I can't even judge the quality of the interface controls -can't work how to do anything at all. But what that does say is that the interface is not intuitive at all.
In fact, I've never played a game for four hours straight and not been able to function in the game, before this.
So I'd have to say that the controls aren't all that great given that they are so obtuse. Even the Readme fille doesn't help -most of the functions are not described, and I hate wasting a weekend day trying to figure out an interface, especially when I'm dying to get into the game itself and can't. |

See the other thread in tips&tricks.
You are right, the controls are not intuitive.
But that doesnīt mean they are bad. IMO they are VERY fast when you are beyond the learning period. They avoid unnecessary mouseclicks.
If you donīt know certain controls use the search function. Every detail has been explained before. |
