Games that have scared you

Games that have scared you...

and on top of that, discuss what qualities makes a game frightening,
Atmosphere
Closed Quarters
Dark Twisted Story
Blood N Guts

I for one have been scared by games such as AVP, Undying and Silent Hill...
another game that had a frightening character was gothic(s) zombie... the scream kinda creeped me out.

Discuss

I usually don't like Horror game, but Silent Hill really got me off! The atmosphere was WOW! IMHO, Dark Twisted Story, or Gore don't scare, a dark story, usually just sucks me into the game, and the gore(especially if too much) just disgusts, but the atmosphere!!!!

Thief. That game could scare me. I remember going through the crypts or whatever that mission was (I think the 3rd) and crouching in the shadows with tons of zombies walking around (and out of holy water). Then one turns toward me and my heart stops (!), I'm not quite sure if it has seen me so I stay still. ALL OF THE ZOMBIES START COMING AT ME TO ATTACK AND I DANG NEAR SH!T MY PANTS! Then I run away and try to find another shadow to hide in.

That game was awesome...

Heh, I also liked Thief, and Vampire: The Masquerade Redemption. Those were Great(!!!!) games! But they didn't scare, they just were nice. SH, on the other hand, was very scary.

Actually, one of the creepiest times for me while gaming, was the encounter of my first Gothic zombie under that one tower. Those gurgling, gagging, shuffling zombies were frightening @ 3am in the dark. Also, when playing Black and White before the first patch, everytime one of your citizens died, the word "deaaath.." would be whispered really creepily. If you arent doing too well (as I didnt), you tend to hear this often. Again, things are different when it's 3am, dark, and you have the word death repeatedly whispered randomly..

As for games "meant to scare", Id have to say Undying has done the best job. Nosferatu is credited by many others as fitting the bill, when it hits the bargain bin Ill check it out ='.'=

Hexen. That’s the first game I remember playing that had great, and very creepy, ambient sound effects.

Ohh!!! How could I forget Hexen?! It was the second PC game I've played(how I loved it that time! ), and had very tangled level system.

Believe it or not, Half-Life scared me the first time around. You know, the parts that had you navigating the base and finding corpses or witnessing horrific deaths.

As corny as this may sound to some, my first real feeling of dread came from an old game called Planetfall. I'm talking the golden age of Infocom. Actually, I looked it up on the web, and here's something on it.

I got so sucked into this game, that at the end, when I came upon the zombies, I was shaking in my pants. And when the little robot died in my arms, I literally wept (I think the only time a computer game made me cry). I think though that playing it for 12 hours at a stretch, with it being 5AM at the time, could have contributed to my emotional instability.
