thanks for the warning

Well, thanks a lot for the friendly warning! I'm guess I'm at a point right now where nothing concerning thief can shock me anymore... and hey there is even one which is 1st person mode... probably because it is fairly hard to aim in 3rd person mode... now that i mention it: i bet Warren is already working on an auto-aim function for the x-box people. The thought alone that someone will actually play thief with a gamepad makes me shiver - it really does.
I still get that itchy feeling remembering that day when i saw Harvey Smith on Giga Tv (it's a German TV show and boy it's moderators are coming straight from hell). Mr. Smith tried to demonstrate the various ways in deus x2 to kill a guard (of course on the x-box and of course he used a gamepad). Good lord... even after 2 six-packs and with both hands bound on my back i would probably show more skill than that guy - if you give me a mouse and a keyboard that is.

I think those shots look pretty good. I wasn't too bothered about the 3rd-person view before - didn't mind it, but didn't think I'd want to use it - but seeing the new shots it does actually look pretty cool, I think I'll try it out.

And even though I'll be playing it on PC, I've been planning on playing it on gamepad ever since I heard about the touch-based lockpicking. Brilliant idea, I wouldn't want to miss out on it. It's not a FPS, if there's a slight lack of precision on gamepad I doubt it will matter too much.

lol. Well done, very original. Another one of these misguided souls who thinks that texture resolution is integral to game quality? Ah well, your username indicates that I can't expect an objective discussion. I'll leave you to wallow in your negativity while I remove my glasses and play some awful, ugly games like UUW or System Shock.

I agree that the textures look quite low res compared to what PC gamers usualy expect, but I think Theif III might be OK.

Its kind of how I felt about DeusEx 2. Sure, its nowhere near what we expected from the sequel to one of the greatest PC Games ever, but taken in its own right its a nice little game. Thats exactly how I will judge Theif III...

I agree...graphics are usually one of the last things I am worreied about when buying or playing games. I want freedom and good gameplay. This game like Ultima Underworld 1&2, Thief1&2, Deus Ex1&2, will deliver the goods. Why...

because ION STORM RULZ!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I have to agree with "ionstormsucks". I didn't play Deus Ex 2, but the way the Thief series is changed with all these new features doesn't appeal to me. Third Person? Hell, no! It was cool to BE Garrett, not seeing what happens behind ME. Now I will PLAY Garrett. That's an extreme difference, and I'm sure it will change the Thief-experience. And I know that I didn't want a change.
To make bad things worse, I'm sure, this won't be just a single change in gameplay and gameexperience. There is more that will be lost - for example, the water. Warren, why did you ban all seas and lakes? Sewer system aren't very exciting when you can't drown, ya know?

Bah, it won't be a "Thief". It will be a "Splinter Cell" in a medieval setting.

for you of course things like touch-based lockpicking are important in the first place... sorry my mistake.

but serious now... no, when it comes to thief you can't discuss with me on a rational level cause I'm a emotinal human being. That doesn't mean i don't accept your opinion. In fact i accept everyone's opinion even that of x-box users. hey, after all I'm not saying we should burn all the x-box users or something (burning their x-boxes on the other hand.. oh well).

honestly i don't like these screenshots. It has nothing to do with resolution... it has to do with the overall look of the game. It looks alot like deus x2 and I already didn't like the graphics there anyway. For me graphics are definetly not very important... as already mentioned the graphics of thief1 or 2 were not really overwhelming (though imo I kinda liked them). I'm more concerned about all these other changes (especially the gameplay changes and the changes in the story).

Ion Storm totally cocked up DX2, and still won't accept that they made a utterly inferior game compared to the original. Fools. I don't have much hope for a Thief game from a company who cannot admit they f**cked up so badly.

Yeah, I did
Sorry, didn't mean to sound so amazingly grumpy... but I guess I was amazingly grumpy when I made the post. Fair enough, you don't like the new art style. I think it's great, I really like the contrast between the warm & cold colouring, and now the in-game visuals more closely match the artwork of the animated movies (I forget the artist's name )

As for the 3rd-person view - don't like it? DON'T USE IT! Sorry for shouting, but complaining about a feature in a game that you'll never use is like complaining to a TV station because you were offended by a show and didn't have the sense to turn the damn TV off. The 3rd-person view is an option. Let's use our brains here, people... please?

I'm not going to labour the point here, as I've posted similarly in the other T3 thread in this forum, but I just think gamers (that's gamers, not fanboys or haters of any particular platform) are doing themselves a disservice by setting their faces against a game that might actually turn out to be good. Try being positive, or at least neutral - you'll live longer, and when you hit 40 you won't have the evidence of decades of scowling permanently etched into your face. And anyone (outside of IS) who thinks they know what the game will be like is a fool, simple as that.

Only problem is you cannot lean. So, you may have no choice but to go into third person view to see around corners. Plus, there had better be no darn jumping puzzles or you will be doing third person again. Not totally against third person, but some people find it hurts believability.

Also, on the gamepad, I'm not too sure it will work well on the PC. I got a gamepad for Grand Theft Auto 3. I wanted to use the joystick feature for gradual acceleration and deceleration. Turns out the gamepad is like a programable joystick. You can program it to replicate keyboard strokes, but it doesn't appear to work like a real x-box controls. So, when I used the forward joystick, it didn't gradually increase as I pressed on it, it just went at top speed. The touch controls would have to be implemented to work with PC gamepad controllers. I hope they do because it does sound like an interesting way to open locks. I wonder how it will work on a keyboard.

PC gamepads are a grey area, to say the least. Some games' support is poor; some manufacturers' drivers are poor. You need a high-quality pad with at least as many buttons & axes as the console pad you want to mimic, and some good programming software so that you can make up for poor support in older (and some newer) games. I used a dual-analogue Gravis pad for Vice City and I managed to get it set up the same as the PS2 version (I didn't use analogue for brake/accel, but I did use it for walking, steering and looking around and the analogue features worked fine - maybe the game just didn't accept analogue input for those particular commands?)

Best bet for Thief3 would probably be to buy an Xbox pad and an Xbox-PC adaptor. I got one recently and the drivers are better than my Gravis drivers! By default the left stick is X-Y, the d-pad is your POV hat, and the right stick is R-Z. You can swap the axes around however you want, and also change the d-pad into four buttons in case a game doesn't accept POV input. Then there are plenty of good freeware apps for mapping keystrokes to buttons and mouse movement to an analogue stick, should you require. Best of all, the Xbox pad driver translates the circular range of motion into a square, so you don't lose your full diagonal range (Gravis couldn't even sort that out - luckily the software allows me to simply whack the sensetivity up).

The PC version of DX:IW supported gamepad play & rumble (given that there's so little difference between Xbox and PC in this respect, it would have probably taken more work to remove it than to leave it in). We can't be sure, but I'd guess that Thief 3 will be the same. I'd be surprised if they removed this functionality.

I too hope there are no platformy bits. They made an effort not to revisit these in Thief 2 and I don't remember any in DX:IW, so hopefully we're safe. And I have long believed that 1st-person is the only way to true immersion, although after discussing it with a game designer friend of mine, and playing Eternal Darkness at length, I'm beginning to change my mind (however, I do think a 3rd-person game has to work harder to match the feeling). If the lack of lean makes the 3rd-person view more necessary, then true, some gamers may find it unpleasant. Whether this will be regarded as a game-ruining feature is down to individual taste, but I personally feel that would be a little on the harsh side.
