How old is your windows installation?
Does your mainboard use a Via chipset (KT133(A) + 686B SB) ?

My gothic 2 crashes exactly the same! I have P4 1700 Mhz, ati radeon 9500 128mb, 256mb ram, sb live! 5.1 , winXP, directX 9.0a , catalyst 3.6 for ati . On the disk where gothic2 is installed, there is 2,5 GB of free space.

DirectX9.0a is not a good idea. Update to 9.0b or go back to 8.1.
-Create a large fixed swap file (1.5 GB or so).
-Set the AGP aperture size to 128 MB or bigger.
-Disable sound to find out if the SBLive causes the trouble.
-Change the sound provider to Miles or DirectsounHW and disable reverb.
-Close _all_ programs before you start Gothic 2.
-Kill all spyware
-get a new virus scanner

sound blaster

well sound blaster live is definetely the problem for me...i disabled the sound and it doesnt crash in any of my games. I have tried disabling my onboard audio and tried sounblaster again yet it still crashes. Should i just get a new sound card? or maybe a new motherboard that supports athlon and isnt a via chipset? and if i should, any reccomendations? I have a 5.1 speaker system...Thanks.

I have to say I´m not surprised the SBLive is the source of the trouble.
Is a SoundStorm certified NForce 2 mainboard an option for you?

mainboard or sound card?

Wouldnt it be more convient just to buy a sound card? Or just to buy a whole new mainboard?

I´m talking about a new mainboard. Some -but not all- NForce 2 mainboards have very good onboard sound with integrated AC3 encoding. These mainboards are certified by NVidia or Dolby Labs (forgot which one) to make sure the sound quality is as intended. The label is called 'SoundStorm'.
Most NForce 2 boards also have excellent overclocking abilities. A slight downside is that 2 identical memory modules are required to reach full speed.
