RPGDot Feature: Gothic Gets Grander - An E3 Interview w/ JoW

Moxie dropped by the JoWood booth at E3 where Stefan Berger was giving presentations of 'Gothic III'. While there, Moxie had the opportunity to interview Stefan about the game.
When I meet Stefan Berger at the JoWood booth, he doesn't waste time jumping into the details. "The release will be Q1 2006 and as you can see it's a whole new graphics engine" he says before he directs my attention to a screen featuring a man clad in fur armor. "This isn't the main character that you see here, but look, you can choose to fight with one sword or with two." His character comes upon two bandits and draws one of the two swords strapped to his back. After a round of trading blows, Stefan then presses a button which causes his character to grab the second sword from his back and take a slick, dual-wield stance.

Sounds Great

If the devs site Ultima VII as a hallmark game... it would be difficult for them to crank out anything but a great game.

Stefan Berger is not a developer. He is JoWooD´s brand manager for Gothic since Gothic 2.

Gorath's right, Stefan did say though that they devs are RPG lovers and ran through the classic list that most of us share. That's probably not a surprise though.

We have Oblivion coming the end of this year, and Gothic 3 out start of 2006. It's going to be a great time for RPG lovers.

Great job, Moxie!!!

One thing that worries me however:

"In three, we have a much bigger landscape, about three times the size of Gothic II." Continuing, he adds, "The final game will have about twenty real settlements compared to about three in Gothic II [and its expansion]."

Gothic II was quite big already...with G3 being so much bigger than G2, I hope they make you not loose track of the main quest line and getting lost in the world...

I'm not a big fan of brand managers!

This guy is obviously good at what he does, he's certainly got the checklist down:

#1 Coming soon!
#2 Graphics
#3 Action
#4 Bigger = better
#5 Old problems addressed - this game is for everyone!
#6 We listen to the fans
#7 Mod community
#8 Name drop a classic

He's smooth, i'll give him that.... and it does sound awesome!

I don't believe it will be out Q1 2006 though

Stefan is smooth. He was one of the sharper guys at the expo in how he dressed. The funny thing that I didn't fit into the article was that he smelled the best of anyone that I interviewed. Europeans definitely have access to some good scents we don't have in North America.

Even though he's good at PR, his interest and enthusiasm had a personal nature that would be hard to fake. I believe he really loves Gothic as much as he says he does, which of course makes him good at the job.

To some extent it can. People can only do so much with the short time they have.

Sorry, maybe that came out a bit wierd. He just stood in stark contrast to all us sloppy nerds hanging around.
