Hey Jaz, you're not alone!
I really liked Lands of Lore: Throne of Chaos. It was one of the first three RPGs I played.
I also really enjoyed Lands of Lore II: Guardians of Destiny. While at its heart I thought it was pretty trashy, it was lots of fun. First, in a similar way to Realms of the Haunting (which it graphically resembles) it's just a "whole lotta game." There's so many interesting places to go. Yeah, the video sprites were HORRIBLE (as was the voice acting accompanying them), but that didn't kill the game for me.
I have LOLIII on my shelf but I've never had the nerve to pick it up. The reviews were SO dire. Plus, I kind of believe in the rule that when the developers couldn't be bothered to give a sequel a subtitle, it's always a bad sign. LOLIII didn't have a subtitle . . . neither did the DOA Might and Magic IX.
I agree that the identity thing was very cool in the second game.
Jaz, do you think I'd like III if I liked II? |

I really enjoyed Lands of Lore 2. The graphics didn't seem to bother me at all. I passed it before they released the 3dfx and 3D support patch. Of course I tried it again with the 3D patch to see the alternate endings.
The game had an atmosphere that really drew me in. I also really loved the music and sound effects. It did take some getting used to though at first. I was waiting for LoL2 since I passed LoL1 when it first came out and was used to the Eye of the beholder type interface.
LoL3 didn't draw me in for some reason. Played it a few hours when it first came out and haven't tried it since. Maybe on some rainy day I'll give it another shot. |

Irritant, that's good to hear !
I had the German version of Lol II so I can't complain about the decent voice acting. I'm not sure if you might like No. III though, it's rather conventional; you have but one character (like in II) but can pick your class(es), you get one of three (?) familiars to help you (tough choice ). What's VERY nice in III, though, is the fact that you get the chance to finish some things your unfortunate LoL I hero started. If you played No. I you'll surely remember some people you would have loved to beat to a pulp but couldn't, etc... well, in LoL III you finally get the chance to do what you always wanted. Besides, there's one dungeon from the old game in it which is aptly called 'LoL I Remembrance Dungeon' if you take a look at the map .
So... you might like it after all.
Oh right. Realms of the Haunting was one of my absolute faves! _________________ Jaz |

I really didn't think LOL2 was trashy at all. The graphics engine was a bit dated, but the graphics were wonderfully detailed and the areas were extremely original, interactive, inspiring, and immersive. I loved the immense amount of exploration and the tons of "subtle" puzzles and intrigues. And the ability to change made a great plot! I have yet to see another game which seems so lovingly hand-crafted and not impersonal like many of today's 3D games.
Yes, the graphics engine was a little old, but you have to forgive them because the game was in development for so long.
Many of the ideas were quite good, but the implementation of them was horrendous at times. In any case, it didn't bother me much. I was too busy figuring out the puzzles. The RPG elements in the game really contributed to the intrigue and puzzle-solving in the environment by allowing you much more freedom to explore and a greater interactivity of the environment. Also, I don't like games in which you aren't in danger. That's my complain about games like Myst. They don't build enough tension because you never get to actually meet anyone or fight anyone during the gameplay. Plus, many of the endings and the path through the games are usually fairly linear...I didn't find LOL2 to be linear at all.
In any case, I'm going to pick up LOL3 soon. I hope it turns out good. I like puzzle solving and exploration, so I'm depending on the third installment of the series to provide me with plenty of challenge and replayability!
Btw, I'm looking into getting RotH. Do you think Clive Barker's Undying or System Shock 2 would appeal to me if I like RotH? I'm looking into getting my own copy of the latter (the former wont run on my crappy SiS video card...at least until I get my new Geforce4 MX 440 64Mb card installed...), but its always so expensive online! Quite the cult classic.... _________________ "Madness is the first step towards unselfishness. Be mad and tell us what is behind the veil of 'sanity'. I guess if you liked Undying and SS2 you'll like RotH. Especially Undying. SS2's atmosphere is a bit different. _________________ Jaz |
