Hmm... Neocron looks cool, from what I recall. I love science fiction RPGs (there's not enough). Maybe I'll take a peek. But I really don't like the el33t. They really, REALLY get on my nerves.

For mindless treadmill leveling and questing for bigger badder kewlest lewt for hour after hour... I'd play Diablo 2 online. In fact, I did (a lot). It's free.

That's one thing I like about Neocron. You can theoretically max out your character in 3 out of 5 skills (INT, STR, DEX) without ever leaving your appartment (assuming someone else brings you materials you need to work with). Actually, once you jump start it, it would probably be possible to do the same with PSI as well. CON is the only skill that requires you to actually be hurt before it would increase. But I suppose you could find a way of doing that as well in your appartment (get a friend to shoot at you and you shoot at them in a safe and controlled environment). So, in theory, if you had a friend to do this with, you could max out a character without ever leaving your front door.

The game is also skill based. Not as much as UO, but it's quite a step up from "kill monsters for XP, put XP points into any skill you want to do" approach. Using actual abilities you put your points into will raise the associated skills (recycling raises INT and DEX, construction raises INT, DEX and STR, etc). So, if you are a researcher (pure INT ability), researching will raise your INT, which in turn will give you skill points to put into INT based abilities like research to be able to research better items. It's a pretty decent system.

About l33t d3wdz... I dunno. I've certainly seen some. But they'll be in any PvP enabled game. The neat thing about Neocron is that they put in a way to protect yourself from them. Supposedly due to "carebears" whining (guess where I got that from ), they put in an implant which pretty much makes you immune to PvP (I say pretty much because I read some reports of people finding workarounds--but this is generally not true). But after a while, l33ts really don't matter. Once you're a bit more self-sufficient, they become irrelevant. Just last night someone tried to be l33t on me... well, he found out what it feels like to be sliced and diced (I was using a fun weapon, not my main weapon--which probably made him think I was easy lunch). I am by no means a power gamer, and this is the first MMORPG (besides A Tale in The Desert--which is a completely different genre so it doesn't apply) where I'm not intimidated by power gamers.

I would really suggest you try it while you can (open beta and all).
