Painted Trolls...

...suck. Just wanted to say that. Damn that quest was hard. I sort of cheesed it in the end but I was starting to get desperate.

Just apply the poison, provided by the painter, to your weapon and they die in 1-2 hits. You have just enough poison to complete the quest.

Heh. I tried that quest at 3rd level.

It ended...badly. Thankfully I had a save outside the painting.

It did show me that definitely not *all* encounters are leveled to you. That one sure wasn't (although I think they did level *up* to me when I came back much later...but it was doable then with the poison).

Yes, painted trolls suck. Oh and they sure didn't die in 2 hits for me (at 12th lvl or so I believe). I had to smack each one with 2 doses of poison and still whack on them a little bit after that (I just avoided one of them by sneaking over some rocks). They definitely put up a fight (skills and gear probably has something to do with it though).

At level 5 -- and as far as I could tell -- my thief marksman couldn't dent them at all (at least, not noticeably before I died ). So, I had to rely on the turpentine and that took 3x shots for me, which meant I could only handle 2 trolls in the whole quest with the 6x turps provided. It took quite a bit of work to only face two trolls.

Playing a mage and had no problem at level 2 with them - they are quite sensible to fire. Took 2 casts of fire damage 25 each.

It was too difficult for me being at level 2 battlemage and all I kept running out the poison the painter gave me, so what I did was I turned around and jumped on the hills killed one painted troll and I found the corpse.

I took a shortcut passed three of them.

This is strange -- sorry for the bump, but I just noticed this -- as I did this quest at level 2, and it was extremely easy. I was rather dissapointed by the difficulty of the quest. I used sneak, made sure they didn't see me (rather hard since they were very aggro), applied the poison and shot them. Took me one shot with the poison and a random one. Took them out one by one and even had 1 Terpentine left.

Lvl 4 Deathmage: wasted 1 turpentine, don't know why. The area is full of jumpable rocks, just climb/jump on one and waste them with spells/bow/summoned creatures or a combination. They can't reach you in most cases.

--------
At the moment: Lvl 11, 658 skill upgrades, about 60 skill-ups per level. F1 to see yours.

Found it too easy myself as a mage; they rarely got close to me!! Spells are more powerful than bows!!

I solved this quest around level 20 - as a reguard warrior I had no problems with going into close fighting.

No need for silly thingies like turpentine or magic.

PS.:
I am Grandmaster of the mages guild, and I can only cast the lowest restoration spell

This is one of the reasons why this game is not close to perfection.

Yes, but as a mage there is access to some great protection spells...?

I was disappointed at how easily they went down to fire - and how many sweet vantage points there were ... but I thought that quest was *sweet* ...
