| German Gothic for speakers of English |

Hi all,
I have already finished both Gothics, but as I am begining german courses I thought I might give the german versions a try. I just wanted to know if the german in Gothic is relatively easy to understand. I know it will be hard, but I intend to keep a dictionnary close to me and to begin only when my course has ended. Just wanted to know if it was possible, if the game hadn't a lot of slang that wouldn't be in a dictionnary or a too high vocabulary that I would have to search almost every word.

The Gothics use everyday language. Pretty aggressive and relatively up to date. I wouldnīt necessarily say this is easy to understand because you canīt be sure to find everything in a dictionary. At least itīs definitely more useful than a game which uses old fahioned language.
You could try the German G2 demo. It should give you a good idea.
A positive point is that the voice acting is pretty good.
All Gothics have a huge retail presence in Germany. Part 1 costs ~ 10 EUR, G2 ~40 EUR, the add-on ~25 EUR and the gold edition in March also 40 EUR.
btw., an excellent online dictionary can be found at http://www.leo.org/dict/osidebar.html (down ATM).

I think I'm going to try it. It might be one of the best ways to learn german, as all of it is voice acted. By the way, do you know a place (on the internet i guess) to buy the german version and ship it to Canada, because here even the english version isn't even sold anymore. I know there is on e-bay, but maybe there might be something better. I like boxes and manuals  |

This thread caught my eye, because a member of my family is also learning
German language, I think it would be too much to suppose that my english
(1.08j) Gothic could somehow be re-scripted to German? (and i used to moan
about not getting english texts in the German "Mods")

Ok, so I went on www.okaysoft.de, but they are only shipping to germany at the moment (don't know if that means they intend to change it). I really want to play the Gothics in the original version, and if anybody knows of an online shop besides ebay that has them and ships to Canada, France or the US it would be great. I'm going to look more, but as my german isn't that good it might be a bit difficult |

I had the same problem when I tried to order the games from Amazon.de
The english help line said that they cannot legally ship electronics (including media) out of the EU. I went with them because they would have taken my credit card.
I ended up buying all three games, from one person, used on the German ebay. I don't know where they are on the web. Someone who shops on U.S. ebay handled the bidding for me. My bid was the highest at 45 euros. The guy only wanted 5 more for shipping. I thought that was not right, so I sent him 60 euros. The hardest part was making the wire transfer to his bank in the Hesse. It all worked out and I recieved the package, with 16 euros of stamps on it, a few weeks later. The Night of the Raven cd has a few scratches on it, but has given me no problems. This was my first buying of something on ebay and first buying of something from Europe. Also my first wire transfer. I thought it went well. I have heard bad stories about US ebay.
If you have someone who will remail the software to from France, You could probably buy the games from Amazon.de and have them shipped there. France is part of the EU. The person shipping them to you might be breaking the law, by shipping electronics, or no VAT. It he or she is willing to do it though, you should send them 20 euros to cover thier costs.
If nothing else, I hope my positive story at least incourages you to keep trying.
My worst problem now is getting another computer powerful enough to play Gothic II. Meanwhile I will just have to play my two Gothic I's simultaneously. |

By the way, Xerxes, if you look well under the link you game me, it says :
"Currently we are able to deliver PC and video games as well as software products only to the countries of the European Union, and to Liechtenstein, Switzerland, Gibraltar and Andorra."
I had already looked at amazon.de. I haven't found another way to ship it to Canada yet, so what I'm doing is shipping to someone I know in France from amazon.de so he can ship it back to me. I hope the software doesn't get lost, cause I'm paying for the shipping the same price as the game heh. |

That is not right. Why is not my money any good? Why would they not want to sell a game to someone else?
We have a open trade policy, this kind of EU sh*t is going to start a protectionist trade war where we will not buy from Europe anymore. = less jobs for Europeans and less trade hurts both countries. I think this kind of 'trade agreements' is for a bunch of greedy ass politicians. 
Well, looks like I will never be able to translate the German game subtitles into English to play the game if we can not even buy it.
Does the USA not sell our games to Europe? What is the big deal?
Free trade is good for all, if we do not buy, it hurts thier sales.
How the hell are we to play the add-on then?
That little note was not there a few months ago was it?
I can still place an order -maybe they sell it anyway??? this is stupid.

A few of the possible reasons are:
-There is no significant market for German language games in North America.
-Amazon.de doesnīt want to compete with Amazon.com.
-Computer games require ESRB ratings. Many countries are cooking their own soup.

Some shops (for example Media Markt, the biggest consumer electronics discounter in Germany) offer a service to sell products without VAT if you sign a paper that it is for export and will not be used inside the EU. Then they subtract the 16% VAT which are included in the retail price, with a few exceptions of course.

How come your PC isnīt strong enough? We heard many stories about G2 being surprisingly tolerant to low end systems. A 1 GHz machine with a GeForce 2 and 512 MB should be enough to get playable frame rates.

Did you mail Okaysoft? Their info page says they even ship to non-EU countries.

You should mail them first to ask them if they ship to North America and under which conditions. Maybe tell them that the future of the English add-on is more than uncertain.
Their FAQ says theyīre shipping to countries outside the EU, but they demand advance payment. P&p depends on the actual weight. Overseas shipping is pretty expensive.
