With an P3@1000 you have to be patient on the first start.
Indexing VDFS is forced if you do not leave the game via the menu.

ps: if you properly ended the game from in-game menu, but the indexing is done on every start... i'll ask Gorath if he can upload an updated (unofficial) version on RPGDot. |

Extremely long load-up time was solved for me by moving the vdfs.exe file from your Gothic System folder into e.g. the root directory.
Now the game loads extremely quickly (and no virtual disk file message!). |

The tool was only written to 'explain' the long loading time on first start and after crashes or termination. Due to a nasty bug it may happen (esp. on Win9x) that the initialization is done on every start and twice (tool + game). So removing it is an valid option to solve the problem. But I would prefer to test an updated version first.

ps: thanks Gorath, I put it on our server (because it isn't that huge and it might be updated (unlikely) if Microsoft invents a new file system or another ME next days (more unlikely)) |

Well, seems to be another problem. What do you mean with blank screen (I know how a blank screen looks like, really. But do you hear sound, is it fullscreen, and so on).

Don't care, I stripped the sense (just kidding).

my human brain isn't always able to make a connection between nick names, real names, and emails

lol sorry
ok so forget the email
I replaced the file , activated gothic and still the same
lets call it a BLACK screen with nothing on it , no sound , no alt+ctrl+del so i can shut the program down ( shut GHOTIC ) no nothing
all I can do is reboot my PC
this is wrong , cause as I heard from people that have win98 / SE , they have the same problem
and I installed the game on my friend PC ( he have XP ) and it worked perfectly
so please guys , do something that the game will work on win 98 SE with directx 9.0a
thanks |

It is possible the black screen is caused by some incompatibility with your graphics card and the opening videos.
Have a look at the Gothic.ini file using Notepad and change the value of the `playlogovideos` to zero instead of 1.
That *may* solve the black screen problem (also makes the game load quicker too!). |
