Noob Modding help

Hey everyone.
I recently got interested in making a mod for Gothic and with the help this site gives i was ready to try. Unfortunately i am mared with dissapointments as I cannot find the Gothic Mod Development Kit but rather found the player kit which doesnt have the spacer exe. I downloaded the free version of 3dstudiomax (gmax) and was happy to know that I could do the first bit of the level modding as I feel that you should start from the ground up. The only problem is that i cant export the file to a *.3ds but rather a *.p3d some plasma file extension. Ive been reading on the internet and there is a way of downloading scripts and plugins that allow you to export to *.3ds with gmax. Again the problem i cant seem to find the downloads or at least I havnt tried hard enough. Anyway, please bare with me as I have no idea how to use gmax extensively and am relying on trial and error as I have to start somewhere. So I am asking anyone out there as to help me as I have 3 months of free time and I am willing to learn. Thanks

You can find the solution for your problem here http://wiki.devmode.de/GMax#q1. Its written in german so i`ll give you a short advice.

1. Download the md3(used for quake 3 moddels) exporter for gmax http://www.dsmith.gmaxsupport.com/downloaditems/md3exp.zip
2. Download the tool "3d explorer" http://www.dsmith.gmaxsupport.com/downloaditems/3dexplor1_5.exe
3. Export your mesh in the md3 format, for static meshs use 0 for Following Frames
4. Open the file with 3d Explorer and save it as .3ds.

Well done, have fun
