Should Russian troops be in Iraq?

My Social Studies teacher told me that if Russia were to send in some troops to Iraq then this war would have ended a long time ago? i also think that.

Oh, now I understand the topic title. When I first read it I thought, 'What the...? Iraq is a smallish country, Russia wouldn't fit into it'.

But would Russian soldiers go to Iraq? I think not, considering that the U.S. found out that Russia was secretly selling Saddam's former troops equipment.

*Note this is partially paraphrasing something that Xen posted yesterday in another thread. http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=83323

To answer the question, absolutely not. If, and this is a huge if, Russia were to sends in a couple hundred thousand troops and - I repeat and - declared marshal law, then and only then yes. However, declaring marshal law would turn any and all moral reasons/explanations for the US starting the war in the first place into hypocrisy, so the US would not let marshal law be declared.

Russians can't insert Iraq 'cause Russia has no reason to fight against Iraq.
Let's faith the truth this war is Oil war... and Russia has enough of it.
And we must not forget that Iraq people treat Russians well.
In deed I think this war shouldn't be stopped because it shouldn't be started!

Not quite... The war is oil-related, that's true, and Russia has plenty of it, true. But imagine Russia had the most, and America had to buy it off them. Now, I think that's worth fighting for.

Then why was Russia buying oil from Iraq while it was under UN embargo?

I wonder about this same question. Indeed, Russia has huge natural oil reserves. They kept the price of gas down in the U.S. for a few years by under pricing OPEC, seems those days are over. Maybe they have a national reserve like the U.S. does and they are adding to it. The U.S. is currently adding to our national reserve oil supple eventhough we have plenty of natural oil.

Don't forget that America is still sitting on the huge Alaskan reserves, which are currently untouched - if necessary they can start drilling there. While the UK has got good mileage out of North Sea oil, reserves are beginning to dwindle. It won't be long before we're almost completely reliant on foreign oil, so while a stable Middle East merely saves the US money, it is pretty vital for the UK.

Sanctions were only in place to allow the main victors from the previous Gulf war (the US and the UK) to get the oil that they wanted - we were in the position to take advantage of sanctions to get oil, but Russia was not. But more interestingly, why is Russia after that oil?

Before the Gulf war Russia had supplied Iraq with a huge amount of military equipment, to be repaid with Iraqi oil. The Gulf war and the sanctions that followed put paid to that plan, and Iraq still owes a huge debt to Russia.

Fine, Russia would be in the wrong if they had ignored the sanctions imposed by the UN. But what if the allies had organised things such that one of the intended consequences of the sanctions was to cause damage to Russia's economy? What then?

Ummm... you do know that there is NOT an infinite amount of oil in the world, right? Oil prices will in the future, most likely, go UP, NOT DOWN.
So, the logic step would be to save your own stuff and buy while it's still moderately cheap.
As far as I know, there's about 90 years worth of oil left in the world.

90 years? That seems very high to me. Given the world's exponential growth in demand for energy I can not believe there is that much oil identified in reachable reserves. Can you link to or cite a source?

Ok... maybe 90 isn't entirely correct.

This says we've got at least 40 years, and potentially 100 years worth of oil:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/3590137.stm

This mostly talk about metals and other stuff, but mentions about 90 years for oil.
