Bard's Tale - Inxile's Project Previewed @ Gamespy |
|
Many of you will recall that Interplay founder and ex-CEO Brian Fargo started a new company called 'InXile Entertainment' a little while ago and was rumoured to have obtained the rights to The Bard's Tale - a game Fargo was producer for all those years ago. Well, the project has been revealed and Gamespy have a <a href="http://www.gamespy.com/previews/september03/bardstalemulti/index.shtml" target="_blank">preview</a> of The Bard's Tale - InXile style. A footnote on InXile's site indicates the international title will simply be 'The Bard's Tale' although trademark proceedings are pending for the US. Gamespy's article may bring mixed feelings, so here's a couple of excerpts:<blockquote><em>Fargo said there are too many clichés in games these days. "We are sick of clichés," he said. "We are tired of the standard sub-quests and missions. The idea of a 'chosen one' is stupid. In our game, the Bard is wise to all this. If he runs into a princess in a tower, he'll comment 'why is there never anyone held at ground level any more?' The Bard will run into several people who think they are the chosen one, and they all get whacked. We want the game to be funny, but in a situational sort of way. We want to make fun of the clichés. Our audience is smart. You don't write down to the level of a 15-year-old D&D gamer." Findley agreed, saying the concept was a bit dark and twisted, designed specifically to stay away from the knight in shining armor.

<br>The game, which is using an improved version of the Baldur's Gate Dark Alliance engine (the one now being used in EverQuest: Champions of Norrath), is being developed primarily for the PS2, although a PC version is also in the works. "Console RPGs are too linear, Fargo said. "We plan for the game to be so involved that it will be physically impossible to see and do everything if you play through only one time."</em></blockquote> |

Wow...the good thing about Interplay's woes is, that we have two new companies doing RPGs now, InXile & Obsidian, together with BIS and Bioware there's enough potential for the next couple of years |

I'll throw Troika into that list.
I'm not sure how big a brand 'Bard's Tale' will be for the PS2 market. I would imagine a large number would never have heard of it...still - good luck to them and I hope the PC version is not far behind the PS2. |

There are a few others doing RPGs as well *grin* ... and not everyone's going for "fantasy".... The next few years will be "ours" again
Hopefully better than crappy MW or NWN. (I still don't think DS is an RPG although it is fun to play.) Well, I'll see, heh.... The game industry just kicks ass |

Most original web page I've ever seen for a game.
Click on the barmaid repeatedly and see where it leads . . . _________________ "The claymore doth permit me to cut effrontery with sharpened steel" |

It doesn't seem to be an rpg at all It sounds like an adventure game mixing King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry. The only rpg thing the game
seems to offer is the name. I hate games where you guide a character
you can't create and take it through someone else's story. PS:T bored me because of this and it actually had quite a bit of rpg in it. _________________ 'nut |
