On yahoo! this morning, I read one of their headline news stories about NASA (that's the American space program for those who don't know) and their next big projects. Many astronauts and scientists are torn between further exploration of the moon and manned exploration of Mars.
The primary concerns include funding, public interest, and government support. The feasibility of a moon landing is much higher than a Mars mission, it would be cheaper and much faster.
What do you all think? Should we conquer the moon before we venture to the Red Planet? Or should we begin gathering information about Mars now? _________________ Member of the "Fantastic ONE"

The Moon. Better something small that works than something big that could potentially fall apart before ever being finished. One step at a time, I'd say.
That, and I'm moonstruck, of course. _________________ “Through the sounds of falling rain, through the clouds of bitter times

With a permanent station on Luna (the moon) we could start drilling for soil samples. Human kind is very resourceful, decades ago we have more silicon than we knew what to do with so we turned it into computer chips, paint, implants, and any number of other things. I’d like to see the creative uses we could come up with for all that green moon cheese. |

On a somewhat related note, didn't Voyager (1 or 2, I can't remember which one) leave the solar syatem a while back? _________________

I think we should start with the moon first.

Voyager 1 is the furthest one out. _________________ Freeeeeeedom! Thank heavens it's summer!

Most likely the moon.
It is a lott cheaper to have a base in space to begin expeditions further out from then from earth. _________________ The original RED poster (retired now)

Moon. Would (eventually) be able to save money because the launches/landings wouldn't require so much effort. _________________ New to 3D? Check out www.3dbuzz.com today! |

It's currently unknown whether the Voyager has actually left the solar system or not. It all depends on your definition of "the solar system", your interpretation of the sensor readings, and the current state of the Sun. From what I've seen it appears to have left the heliosphere, but then the increased Sun activity over the past few months pushed the boundaries further out and it's inside again.
It's an interesting one to watch. The fact is we have no idea what conditions are like out there. There are lots of theories, but until we actually see it we just don't know. It's likely to be pretty nasty - the Sun gives us a lot more protection than many realise. _________________ Charlie Dobbie

I would personaly prefer to see us get to Mars now, but as previously suggested its a lot more realistic and sensible for us to build a base on the moon to use as a relay point first. _________________ IMHO my opinion is humble |
