Hello folks, the Gothic II facts page has been updated with several facts from the RPGDot- and WoG- forums developer threads. To make it easier for you to find the new stuff I used yellow text for new info bits and changes to older infos  (at least until I find the time to overhaul the page in toto)...

what EXACTLY does "optional 1st person" mean?
other than that, I am foaming at the mouth
I'm not expecting G2 to be G1 with bells and whistles and perfection - I just want ANOTHER Gothic adventure RPG game to play in!

You can freely switch between 3rd and 1st person.

3d person = Duke Nukem 3d ,Return to Castle Wolfenstein , SOF2 etc
1st person = Gothic 1 , Max Payne etc |

3rd Person = Behind character = Gothic 1
1st Person = In character's head = Most shooter games

You ask a friend to play a 1st person game and take all decisions while you remain silent and watch.

What is this first/second/third person all about? 
First person perspective - you see what your character see in game's world. Also first participant in particular events, usually your own, or see and acts through your own eyes.
Third person perspective - centered view, or camera view from above. Includes isometric camera view like in BG series or RTS games. Also called the third participant, see other peoples involved in certain events, e.g you see two persons involved in car accident and they argues & such.
Second person perspective? - just like what Gorath already explained. I think it is rarely use in games, maybe text base games; e.g starts with the words "...You are standing in an open field south of Dark Tower..." anyway it's more common in literature.
