bug or just bad luck
   

there are some creatures that give up when they are "near death"
but I sometimes kill them accidently - ex. spirit of the woods ..some maxed fireballs *oops* stupid..they should be undefeatable and give up after taking some damage.
is this a bug or am I supposed to be more careful with sb who could be important? just to know that in the future.. hate replaying an area

I'd say first, save your game before taking on a boss monster. There are several people that will give up after losing a certain amount of hit points. It is not a bug.
