Indeed. The difference between a successful villain and a monster lies firmly in the realm of 'restraint'.
"Monsters destroy anything that moves until they are destroyed. They are obvious, heroes flock at them and eventually they fall. True villains are subtle... moving through minions and hirelings while amassing enough power to deal with heroes who manage to learn the truth. Knowledge is power, and thus denying your opponents knowledge denies them power over you.
That being said, show no weakness when dealing with your followers or minions. Let them know their inferior place in the order of things at all times... lest one get ambitious and try and replace you. Strike fear into your vassals, but do not destroy them en masse. Make examples of people, and if mass destruction is needed... diseased rats will decimate a village as well as a thousand calvary."
(excerpt from an old guide I wrote for RPGs called 'So, you want to be a fantasy villain?')

Or you could try a truely evil route: The best slaves are the ones who don't know they are slaves. Give them their 'dillusions' and they will love you for it.

If you want to play evil that destroys good, play dungeon keeper. There is part 1 and 2. that game is so freakin fun. The graphics are pretty good too. In that game your evil dungeon keeper trying to take over all the realms of good, and you kill heros, torture them, turn them into skeletons to serve you. Its great |

Why, to kill the good guys of course!
It's kind of like a RTS, but you build a dungeon and summon little minion monsters to train, build, gamble, and kill goody-two-shoes. You'll find it in your friendly local bargin bin for $10.

Your welcome
The best part of Dungeon Keeper 2 is when one of your minions hits the jackpot in the casino. You will fall out of your chair laughing.

If this is the game I'm thinking about, I was watching a massive battle at a friends place and all of the sudden all the creatures or whatever started singing "Burn baby burn! Disco inferno!"
We almost died.

That's the one. Did you notice how they were dancing? Classic. Definately in the top ten funniest moments in computer gaming.
