Slow Gothic start-up

Hey... I'm wondering. Why does Gothic 2 (and 1) start-up take so long? What does it do? You get that progressbar, then the splash screen and it doesn't seem to do anything at all. Is this really necessary?

Upon first start the virtual file system initilizes 25.000 files. Then it should go faster. If the start still takes much longer than 30 seconds you have a performance problem.

Actually, I get the idea that it initializes the virtual file system every time I start. I get the progressbar every time and it times MINUTES, maybe even up to 3-5 minutes. This would not be good, I suppose. Any way to fix this or what? I usually start Gothic and go away from the computer until it is loaded.

Same here. The virtual file system loads every time. Totally taking about 4-5 minutes to start up the game each time.

So, is this just something we'll have to live with? Surely there are even more advanced 3D engines that don't require this kind of time-intensive initialization.

This is explained in the FAQ.

I erased the 'virtual file system' from the "Gothic 2" file. The game loaded very quickly and the game had nothing unusual. At least during the time I was playing.

That's what I like to hear. But where can I find the FAQ? I looked for it. Really. Or did you mean the walkthrough/guide?

Sorry, found it. I had looked in the forums, but rpgdot.com is very slow for me right now and I apparantly missed it.

Hey, after I've replaced that Vdfs32e.exe file, the virtual file system STILL gets initialized every time I start Gothic 2. What gives?

Move it somewhere else. Copy it back after a crash.

Cut and paste the vdfs32.exe file to your C:\ root directory. Then delete vdfs32.exe from the Gothic2 system folder. Edit the gothic.ini in the line for playlogofiles to 0(it is showing 1) It is line # 11 under [game] in the ini file. This will eliminate the opening videos and go right to gameplay. The game should now start up in less than two minutes
