Earth and Beyond (The demo on the front of this months PC Gamer) doesn't require a credit card for 2 weeks. It's like elite, but with more roleplay elements.

I have to say, Abbath, that I am in total agreement with you. MMORPG's would take off in a big way if you didn't have to sign your name to a credit card, and hand over the details to them before you could play.

Aside from alienating any players under 18, who can't have a credit card, you also alinate people like myself who point blank refuse to have one. Mobile phones took off because, i think, of top-up cards. You could pay for exactly what you want to use without the danger of over-spending. If a similar approach was taken to online games, maybe selling top-up cards in game stores, then subscription would rocket!

I'm surprised at how easy this was to come up with, and the fact that only a few MMORPG's have adopted top-up cards, and those that have only sell them in America.

Another simple solution to a simple problem, which nobody will listen to, courtesy of stu-small-brain inc.

I assume that by "top-up cards" you refer to pre-paid cards bought in stores, right? I don't want to correct you, maybe that's what they're called where you live. I just want to make sure we're talking about the same thing.

I'm a big fan of pre-paid cards too, if for no better reason that I hate to use a credit card on the web.... But would it really catch on that much if there were more games with them? I doubt it. It certainly didn't help Earth & Beyond. The problem is that with a cell phone you know what you're getting into when you buy a pre-paid card. With most online games you don't... You can't compare the two.

If there are pre-paid cards available for a given game, I never buy it until I know the game is worth it for me, and that usually takes a couple of months at least. And since most pre-paid cards sell by increments of 3 months at a time, I'd rather pay for the individual months on their own first.

Yep, we're talking about the same thing. Who says they have to make them 3 months minimum? They could just as easily make a 1 month version.

They use credit cards (not debit cards like switch, which i have), because then they're GARUNTEED to get their money, whereas if they allowed cheques and direct debits, then they would have a problem if your account ran out.

Take Warhammer online, comig soon. If they started selling top-up cards in the games workshop, whose stores spawn small gaming communities and clubs anyway for the board games, surely that would be the biggest MMORPG ever!

by the way, i apologise if nobody can understand my lingo, but i'm from England (well scotland at the moment). Hope you know what i'm on about!
