Character Building? - may have a minor spoiler or two beware

I want to build an effective character so I don't waste tons of LP's. First off I want to be a merc. Can I do two handed AND crossbows? If not I definately want to do two handers. Should I use all my LP's on strength till I get 65 in strength? Or should I use the points to learn a few non combat skills? The 65 strength is the required strength for the orc slayer. Does 65 damage. Can be found in the valley where there are those ziggurat temple shaped buildings in one of the chests there. I aquired that weapon on chapter one as well. So how should I go about building my merc effectively?

I always go with Str and meelee skills first then after learn crossbow and dex, there is more than enough LP in the game to learn both but I would advise concentrating on 1 at a time.

i think its best to always raise your dex at the start just a little so you can use a resonably good bow/crossbow to kill any average monster you find on the path
