That's definitely an interesting article, and for the most part, he's right. But when he said that RPGs require no hand-eye coordination or skill, he wasn't thinking about games such as Gothic, which require that sort of skill. Also, joining guilds is another big reason people like RPGs that he forgot to mention. _________________ OMG! WTF?! MONKEYS!!!!

For the most part for my taste he's wrong.
quote:
I don't think it's hard to see that, as a genre, RPGs are inferior to other kinds of games in several identifiable ways.[...]
With the biggest strength of the RPG genre identified and isolated, some game developers are refining the genre and stripping away the garbage.
By quoting these two snippets I've taken them a little out of context so please read the article before drawing any conclusions.
His argument is that stategy games do better strategy than RPG, books do better stories blah blah. The only part he finds worthwhile is the character creation so he advocates adding character creation to other genres to create hybrids that are better than true RPGs.
Not buying it for a second. _________________ Editor @ RPGDot |

"For a good story, you are usually better off reading a book or watching a movie. Some RPGs have great storylines, but few can compete with the best that the silver screen has to offer, and most RPGs are downright tedious and redundant compared to film. You may say "But RPGs are longer and have more depth than films!" Well, if depth of story is important to you, then why not pick up a good book?"
Then why does he watches movies in the first place?? Books have much more depth |

He seems like the kind of person that perfers Diablo 2 to other rpgs... _________________ If soot stains your tunic, dye it black. This is vengeance.

I can not agree with him.
He begins with:
"Unlike most games, there is almost no skill required in RPGs--no hand-eye coordination, no button-timing."
And he is not right. For example - there is a lot real-time RPGs witch requier eye coordination and button-timing. However why he does not think that strategic thinking, good planning ect. are also skills at all? |

And he completely misses that point that a movie is 100% passive, you watch the story, in an RPG you *are* the story. A good rpg allows you to move the story in the direction you want.
I am with Dani, I don't buy it. _________________ =Member of The Nonflamers' Guild=

All,
Don't fall for this false argument. The guy is obviously just trying to be controversial. He knows that a certain avid group of gamers are going to get upset by his ridiculous opinion. This was just designed to stir up the pot and get gamespot more traffic. I'm surprised he didn't start spouting off I powns joo at the end of his article to really tick of avid RPGers. _________________ Ha, Ha, Ha.... Oh, you were SERIOUS?
