Gothic 3: First in-game screenshot @ JoWooD-News

Last week JoWooD organised a "The Guild 2 and Gothic 3"-event for a small selected group of people. Besides dressing up as knights and doing some sword-fighting the very first in-game screenshot from Gothic 3 was shown.

PC Games online has posted a small (German) article about the event with several more photos.

I agree. I didn't expect to be so delighted by this screenshot after having seen the pre-rendered screens floating around on the internet for the last year ... which look quite drab and dark.

I'm glad to see that gothic 3 looks the way it appears to look in the screenshot... very colorful and it sorta has this look and feel like you can reach into the screen and grab objects you see.

Very nice.

That's the first shot I've seen that doesnt tell me I need a new PC. Wouldnt that be nice.

Looks like Gothic 2 with better trees.

Question for Gothic fans: is it third person perspective, and what's combat like?

I'd love to get into some real RPG goodness, but I can't STAND first-person, mouse-look combat like in Morrowind.

Also, has anyone tried PS2 style controllers for these games, instead of mouse-look?

Its 3rd person. Combat is twitch based action - not predominately stat based like Morrowind - which means the feel is alot more responsive than what you get in Morrowind.

I havent used a game controller. Its WASD for movement and mouse look.

Gothic plays VERY well with PS2 style controllers. It is a bit of the mouselook deal at times. But it plays Third person. The game seems made for control pad play. You should like it.

The game is fully third-person, although its predecessors had the possibility to change to first-person to get a better look on the ground to find plants etc. When fighting the view automatically turned back to third-person.
I suspect this will be the case for Gothic 3 too.

It's hard to tell something about the combat, because according to Piranha Bytes the interface and fighting system has been completely revamped. In Gothic 1 and 2 the controls were consol-like and now and then a little awkward for some.

Both Gothic 1 and 2 can be played without even using the mouse. For Gothic 3 the controls will be more mouse-based, but there will be still the possibility to change back to Gothic 2 controls, for the die-hard fans.
Combat will be a combination of click-click-click combo's and special moves, so it is possible to click your enemies to death, but you can also fight more "intelligently".

Very informative, thanks. If they put a demo out for Gothic 3, I'll definitely borrow a wireless game controller from work and give it a chance.

I like the screenshot. I want more. Much more. The game, if possible.

Wow, just wow!

I am wordering that same thing ShadowMoses, I hope for an option to turn that off.
I really really really like that 2 handed Orc (halberd/scythe?) and the hero's armor, too.

I really think Piranha Bytes was correct in not trying to go over board with state of art graphics.
It's looking more and more like all the SpeedTree and 360 development has taken a serious toll on performance in Oblivion.
The draw issues brought up by that orginal reviewer that was slammed accross the net for saying it did not look good was right after all.
