Trade Commands Mk1 and Mk2 are both used when a ship is assigned to a home base. Until it's assigned, those commands will be inactive even if the extensions are installed on the ship.

Here's what you want to do:
1) install the Trading system extension in the ship you plan to fly
2) install the navigation commands in the ship you want to trade with
3) open up the property screen (r) and select the trader ship, Use the navigation commands to send it to the factory you want to trade with
4) return to the property screen occasionally to see when it arrives
5) select it off your property screen and have it trade, then use the nav commands again to send it to another station to sell.
6) repeat many, many, many times.

If you have a spare 500,000 credits laying around and you've installed the officially sanctioned Trade Mk3 user script, you can issue a single command to your trader and he'll run from station to station all by himself.

Hope that helps.

Yes, a Home Base can be any station owned by you. Set up an SPP in say KE and then you can assign that as the Home Base for any of your ships. Works quite well once set up, so long as you avoid attacks. The odd nav sat helps too.
