Hm. A thought just came to my mind: we hear a lot of blockbuster RPGs like Baldurs Gate or (if you consider it to be one) Diablo.

But there were other RPGs without a lot of PR fuzz we all enjoyed. Maybe even RPGs that got bashed by reviewers and we thought: it ain't that bad, I liked it.

One game comes to my mind in that respect: Revenant. Hadn't much fuzz about it, and the critics weren't too enthusiastic. Nevertheless, I remember I had a great time with the game (although I didn't finish it).

I liked Revenant too, and I did finish it. The game wasn't that long, and was very oneway street in the last quarter of the game.
I'm not so sure about which games got a bad review and which not, but two games I'm sure of was Migth & Magic VII and VIII, they both got, lets say, lesser good reviews, Number VIII even worse than VII, mostly because of the graphical engine. I agree that the graphics have seen better days, but there was still very good gameplay in these two games IMHO.

A real underdog is published 1996 by BlueByte from the makers of two Thalion hits Amberstar and Ambermoon.

Albion is a severely underrated RPG. The game has a detailed story, a huge and well-realized gameworld, a novel use of both 2D and 3D views, and some unique puzzles that are a far cry from the normal find-a-button-to-open-door puzzles found in most RPGs.

I had a lot of fun with this game.

definitely Demise: Rise of the Ku'Tan! the dungeon was huge with lots to find and a decent character development system. most reviewers didn't seem to get what the game was about. the demo alone has enough dungeon for many hours of play.

Ah, Demise. I was unable to get this one in Europe. I loved the demo, really. Any idea where this one could be ordered? I am really interested in buying this game...

The only place I was able to find it was on the chips&bits website.
http://www.cdmag.com/cgi-bin/order.cbi_home?source=80124

But it's currently out of stock...perhaps if you contact them they could tell you when it will be available again.
Good luck

Oh. Thanks, I'll try that

To stay on the thread: I had a lot of fun playing Darkstone. It had some good reviews, but little to no hype. And I think that Evil Islands (after the patch) is a darn good game.

My choices,

System Shock 2. A classic game that holds its own with Deus Ex. You could also add System Shock to the list.

Dark Sun. This was a real fun game, and had me fairly addicted.

Star Trail. I never played the first part, and the third part was a real disappointment, but this was a great game.

Master of Magic. I know this is not really a RPG, but I played this game for over 4 years. While we are getting Civ 3 and Master of Orion 3, still no sign of a sequel.

I thought Soulbringer was pretty good myself.

I havn't played either Soulbringer or Demise, but I also enjoyed Albion.

As for Might Magic, while I really enjoyed 6, 7 and 8, 3DO aint doing themselves any favors by releasing so many bad spin offs. Legends, Warriors, Crusaders and the millions of HoMM 3 have done their reputation no favors.

Another RPG which everyone seems to hate, was Lands of Lore 2. I really enjoyed this game. The film sequences were the usually incredibly high standard from Westwood, the 3 different forms made the game very interesting, and the music was first class. Westwood used to make first class RPGs. From Eye of the Beholder 1 and 2, to Lands of Lore, they were always made with love for the genre. I find it a pity that they seem to have given up developing anything except Dune and C+C games. Another developer gets devoured by the EA monster. Origin and Bullfrog are in good company.

Sea Dogs, a fun game that got absolutly no attention. Maybe the sequel will make the breakthrough.

Funny you mention Sea Dogs. While I really enjoyed playing it for some time, the hardship of naval battles (no tutorial) and the limited possibilities make it a little bit boring after some time, imho. I expected it to be a Daggerfall on water, but it really wasn't. Nevertheless, I still think it is one of the better games out there...

-Ultima IX with patch 1.18f and 256mb RAM
-Wizard & warriors also with a patch.

Both games had a lot of very good gameplay after the patches, but the most gamers / reviewers never cared. There loss I guess.

I really liked Ultima 9 as a whole too. Even though the "Final" version they put out really should have been the First version they put out. It still had plenty of bugs. I never played it with any of the fan patches, but I liked the game a lot. Even though they linearized it, I still enjoyed it. Interesting enough, I had a garage sale a couple of months ago and after we had finished we were cleaning up. Some kids on bikes came up and they wanted all my old ultima games that I still had. I was amazed, these kids were maybe 10 years old and they even knew what Ultima 6, 7 and 8 were.
