Can't decide if I should play Wizardry 8 or System Shock 2.

I've played 5 mins of each, both seem badass. I guess it obviously depends on the type of game I want, since they both have different settings. I want something that completely envelopes me to where time passes by as if nothing. Some opinions on which game I should bust out would be appreciated.

Note that I have not played System Shock 2, only Wizardry 8. That being said, Wizardry 8 definitely fits your criteria of an enveloping game.

- You have the main story which is rather good.
- The character development is a very strong feature of the game.
- It has very interesting side quests.
- Monsters regenerate in areas randomly (based on the party level), so an area is never the same a second time through it (I'm still finding monsters that I have never seen before even after having been through the game numerous times).

If you do decide to stick with Wizardry 8, make sure to get the combat accelerator (search the Wizardry 8 forum for it). You can speed up the monster movement rate so that it appears that a monster moves instantly (almost like they are teleporting). It is a good way to speed up combat.

Also, the road to Arnika is not an easy one necessarily (probably the hardest part of the game for most people). Stick with it through this part.

Well... these games are so different indeed it is quite difficult to give an opinion about which one you should play. Both are 3D and first-person view games, but that's where similarities end. While Wiz8 features extensive character building, extensive party management and round-based combat, SS2 has only basic character building options (three character types to choose from), no party and real-time combat. Storywise, both are pretty decent games, one is set in the techno-fantasy world of Wizardry, the other a twitch-and-horror-story on board of a derelict space ship (not quite up on a par with SS1, but not far away from it, either). Both games are said to be quite immersive, but I can confirm this for SS2 only because I stopped playing Wiz8 after three hours because of the slow, slow combat which seemed to take forever. So if you want to try out Wiz8, you should get the combat accelerator like _gator said... when I heard of its existence I had already sold my copy of the game.

I've never playd SS2, so I can only recommend Wiz8. It was one of my best-of-all-times game.

I've played both and I enjoyed both. Depends on what you want. For TOTAL immersion, however, you can't go past SS2. I guarantee you'll jump out of your seat at some point in the game, especially if you have the lights low and the sound up!!

Wizardry 8 is good for filling in the long gaps between game releases. It's always a fun game to play.

Thanks for asking this question ... I found the answers to be very interesting.

I've never played SS2 and so can't make a comparison, but I can ditto everything said about Wiz 8 before this. Wiz 8 is VERY time consuming and moves at a pretty majestic pace, and I am very much enjoying it.

I like wizardy 8 - the combat system was fun to play. The storyline was okay. Very old school type game.

I gave up on system shock 2 after about six hours of playing.. I cant remember why I didnt like it for some reason, considering I loved Deus EX.
Both games have similar game mechanics.

I'd play System Shock 2 personally..great atmosphere.

I really tried to enjoy Wizardry 8, I really did but the combat was way, way too long for my personal taste. If the combat was speeded up A LOT it would have been one of my faves from that year.

I may try the aforementioned combat accelerator should I try again one day.

The accelerator makes the combat a great deal more enjoyable.

I got to level 3, where all those plants are, in ss2. However, I decided to try wiz8 a bit more. I downloaded the combat accelerator and it's been awesome. This game is truly amazing. The only bad thing I can thing of is when monsters move next to me out of my line of site, my computer starts stuttering. Other than that, I'm in the swamp, my chars are lev 12-13 and I love this game. Definitely in my alltime top 5.

I need to try this. I still have Wizardry8 laying around.

I'd love to play System Shock2. I loved the demo.

Wizardry 8 or System Shock 2 ?

I cannot answer this question, because you
have to play b o t h games

... and Wizardry 7 and System Shock 1, too.

these games are some of the best in gaming history.

No choice for me,

SS2 all the way...

If your between games, I assume your hungry...
Wiz8 is a delivery pizza with everything you ordered.
SS2 is a home cooked meal by Mom...

Notable specifics,
Wiz8 is all combat all the time all day long...
SS2 is intrigueing gameplay, suspense, mystery...
SS2 is designed to let you make the next choice,
rather than kill the next Orc...

If I were stranded on a desert island,
( with a decent computer and generator and a renewable fuel source )
and only one of the two games listed above...

SS2 all the way...
