Ranger Spells
   

My character is a 6 or 7th level Rogue, Ranger level 1. I can't seem to get any Ranger spells. Where do I get them? Grrr!

If your wisdom is high enough you'll get them starting at level 4 ranger.

Multi-classes do not stack when it comes to providing class benefits. You're a level 7 character, which means you have the powers of a level 6 rogue and a level 1 ranger. You don't have the powers of a level 7 ranger and a level 7 rogue. However, you do have the attack bonuses and saving throws of a level 1 ranger plus a level 6 rogue... which means you're much more agile than a standard ranger. But no second favored enemy, no spells, no superior attack bonus, no superior hitpoints.

But you do have sneak attack +3d6, evasion, immunity to being flatfooted and a LOT of skills. Multi-classing is a juggling act of character concept vs functionality.

The advantage of staying single class, ultimately, is more ability within your chosen class.

I thought Rangers got first level spells at first level. Didn't know that they had to wait until 4th. Thanks!

Only the true 'casting' classes get spells at first level. (Wizard, Sorcerer, Bard, Druid, Cleric).

Paladins and Rangers (pseudo-casters) have to wait.

Barbarians, Rogues, and Fighters never get spells of course. They don't need 'em.

Monks don't get spells, but get spell like crazy abilities every level of their career.

Seriously whilst studying for my exams I was reading stuff from the new 3rd edition D&D books and I found in my exams I may not have been able to remeber much about my Molecular Biology but I could remember the requirement for the Red Wizards of Thay Presteige Class (which sadly didn't help much on a question about Cyclin-depentent programmed cell death)

The new D&D are really well written so this sort of really useful info really does stick in the mind

I've been playing and DMing D&D in all of its forms for more than 15 years. Not only can I tell you when most classes get their abilities, I can probably tell you WHY they do at certain points in their career with option vs need comparisons.

I don't know 3e anywhere near as well as I should, though. I have to look up things like when exactly a Monk gets Abundant step or exactly what level 4 ranger spells are used.

But I've got most of the PrC reqs and feat reqs down, as well as spell progressions and core mechanics.

I just don't have as much time to memorize every bit of data in the three core books as I did for every second edition book when I was a young teenager. Darn real life getting in the way and all...

He has books memorized, it's scary...Don't ever try to get into a debate with him on any RPG or Storytelling System he even remotely knows...as Ivan Drago once said "You will die"

Damn that real life stuff - always ruins a good roleplay session

Forgotten Realms is one of my favorite... then there is another realm me and my friends play in... we made it up...

I must admit I enjoy playing in the Realms more thanb anywhere else probably because I know more about the background. The background literature (both source books and novels) are well written and provide a rich gaming world. Now if only someone coud convince Ed Greenwood to stick to source books then we'ed all be happy

Much of my early D&D was spent in the Forgotten Realms. It's a good, high magic setting of super-fantastic-fantasy.

Of course, most people sneer and derride FR for that reason as well. Magic is all over the place. WHen you've got it, you've got it.

Later on I tried to design a world based on the Death Gate cycle, but it only lasted a session or three. 2nd edition was too limiting for it...

(as an aside, it was at that point... five years before 3e hit the shelves... where I 'invented' a system of multiclassing nearly identicle to the one in 3e)

Once 3e came out I elected to take something and expand on it exponetially rather that start from scratch.

I translated Kohan: Immortal Sovereigns to pen and paper, and that's the world I run. The world of Khaldun, where immortal champions (like the player characters) do their part to protect their mortal charges.

(Immortality of the Kohan is represented by basically an automatic raise dead spell. When you die, like in the Kohan strategy game, you get reverted to an 'amulet' state (your corporeal body falters and your will retreats to this shell) and another Kohan can revive you with a ritual that they all know. Getting 'woken up' like this makes you lose experience points, just like the 3e raise dead spell. And no... there is no raise dead, ressurection, true ressurection spell chain in my setting. Only Kohan come back.

One prestige class has an improvement to this ritual so a Kohan struck down only loses half the experience. It works well... and in my opinion is much more 'credible' than divine intervention raise deads and ressurection spells being flung around wildly if someone 'goofs' and dies.)

Something which the 2E "Arcane Age" setting really didn't help

Thanks for the feedback - your custom campaign world sounds interesting. I will admit that when I am DMing I really don't like killing players - unless they do something really stupid. Most of the time they end up unconsious instead of dying but your system provides a good alternative.
