I have become quite fatalistic about the election. I think there is a better-than-even chance that Bush will win again. However, at least that means that the "Pottery Barn rule" will be preserved - you break it, you own it.
It doesn't matter that Bush gained power by virtue of disenfranchisement of voters based on flawed records of felons, dodgy voting machines, and Jeb's intervention.
It doesn't matter that just a few years after 9/11 America is more hated around the world than at any time in history.
It doesn't matter that Bush is great friends with people like Ken Lay, and Cheney won't say who is on his energy policy advisory board.
It doesn't matter that deficits and debt are at record levels and the whole economy could topple over after any medium-sized crisis.
It doesn't matter that Bush gave a deliberately misleading budget.
It doesn't matter that he is spending as much on nuclear weapons as at the height of the Cold War, while soldiers don't have enough armor.
It doesn't matter that Bush has spent around 40% of his term on holiday.
It doesn't matter that the Administration moved millions out of funding for Afghanistan and into funding for Iraq without Congressional permission, in direct violation of the Constitution.
It doesn't matter that Bush can overturn decades of policy on Israel at the drop of a hat and promise the West Bank to Sharon in perpetuity.
It doesn't matter that the Iraq expedition is turning into a massive failure.
It doesn't matter that the Governing Council and Halliburton are lining their own pockets at the expense of Iraqi reconstruction.
Everyone is still going to vote for him.
Like I say, I'm fatalistic. I'm just sitting back and watching as reality gradually catches up with all these guys. It's sad, but it's not the end of the world - unless they decide to take on China, that is. |

A) I cannot imagine why. It's a shame the article is not publically available to non-subscribers, as it was a good read. I would also like to point out, for the record, that we're democratic socialists, not communists. Thanks!
B) The economist in me says that two things present a problem:
1) The Economy (consumerism) is currently being propped up by loans being taken out against overvalued housing. If I have a $10 dollar home which has appreciated to a value $15 dollars and I take out a loan on the $15 dollar house to buy stuff, I am not buying with my income, I'm buying with money from something that I don't really want to sell in order to buy more stuff. It's like how credit cards create temporary money from nothing. If house prices fall, there would likely be serious negative ripple effects on non-essential goods.
2) Outsourcing of tech. jobs: $80,000 in the States, $11,000 in India. Need I say more? _________________ Make good choices. |
