LAN Game slow down

Everything is fine with DS except my mid powered PC (P4 1.4+GF3) in MP this game stutters beyond belief. My other 2 PC's are fine just this one. When running a MP game the disk asccess light regularly flickers, in time with the game stutters. This PC is the same set up as my other two (Win ME) and they are both fine, neither showing any signs of disk access.

If I use the application priority switch in options this PC works nearly OK but still a very occassional skip.

Any ideas anyone?

Andi.

Are the HD's (and CDROMs) similar size/speed? Has it recently been defragmented? Have you tested network latency on the machine to make sure it isn't getting collisions, or has a more latent connection?

I hope one of those ideas helps speed things up.

Vaiticide is right, it sounds like either the hard disk needs tweaking (Speed disk etc) or your having some kind of memory leak. (Or maybe you have low RAM, how much do you have anyway?).

If the one slowing down is the server then its gonna need more ram than the clients anyway, and with running the peice of crap that is ME you are gonna have real bad memory management anyway.

clarifications

Sorry, for mid read middle, somewhere between the P4 1.7 GF3 and the P4 2.2 + GF4.

The slow PC does the same when hosting or joining.

The problem PC has 512MB of PC2100 RAM and all drivers are latest or working fine on another PC.

I've just run EnditAll to get rid of any problem system tray bits and the problem still persists.

I'm doing a re-install of ME to see what happens, then I might have to resort to a full blown reformat and re-install.

Defragmentation should help. No need to reinstall. Just make yourself sure that you have enough space (or large enough) page file.

Aaagghh

Why this one PC? that's what I want to know. Never mind, by the time this 10lb lump hammer has done it's job the damn thing will run properly .

Defragged it, tested the LAN re-installed windows, deleted all odd entries in Device Manager from Safe Mode, terminated all back ground processes.

Ah I know FORMAT that will show it who's boss.

I'll let you know what happens, have you ever wanted to murder yopur PC?

Andi.

If at all possible, I would try another OS. ME seems to have a lot more problems than its share, even for a MS OS. A re-install usually doesn't fix problems in my experience, a format is probably called for.
