You'll want to save skill points for mana and making runes.
Train a backup weapon like one-handed or ranged.

Mana is most important , of course. You'll need plenty of mana...

But in the beginning you may also train your STR and DEX (until you can wield weapons that at least can do some damage).
I also had a little training with one-handed blades...

Though I personally didn't learn a single potion, learning alchemy would be apt for a mage, too.

It would be a waste to train in more than one combat type.
Learn alchemy and you can increase your mana that way as well.

so i shouldn't use any points for one hand, two hand, bows and xbows, just use them for magical abilities?

It's good to have a backup weapon when you run out of mana. But you don't need more than one.

Suggest fighter in one handed. But do it before you finish the test of fire.

Ya...no need for any bows I don't think...I mean most of the damaging mage spells are long range anyways so who cares...but a melee weapon is very important....I guess everyone else thinks go for 1 handed but I like 2 handed...when I was a Palidan I was taking on 5 orcs or lizard men at the same time with my 1 handed weapon and I just healed and hit ect ect...I think for the mage you should use 2 handed because I don't think they can take as many hits as the Palidan or the Merc...just my opinion but if your really good with 2 handed you'll never get hit
