Map Question

In DD is it generally a good idea to complete each major map area (i.e. The starting map which includes Aleroth, Farmlands, Rivertown, and surrounding areas) before moving on to the next?

It is not neccesary, however, you'll want to gain as many levels as you can before entering places like the Dark Forest because creatures there can be harder to beat.
The open-endedness of the game allows you to go almost anywhere at any time. However, if you find an area is too difficult for you, then you should try a different area first.
