Pause function in RTS??

I always thought that RTS always sucked...but now i'm playing Warlords Battlecry and i came to the conclusion that they can be really enjoyable if we can issue orders to the units while the game is paused...because i hate in RTS when i'm attacking an enemy and i also want to build things and stuff...or attacking from more than one side. That's not strategy IMO.
Anyone knows more RTS where you can pause the game and issue orders? (besides Age of empires 2)

Warcraft3 gets pretty frantic, would like to be able to pause/issue in that one big time. But then again, i guess that's what separates the mediocre from the experts, quick thinking and actions. Made me a better player methinks in some ways ='.'=

Btw. I really prefer turn-base strategy games. UFO for example was fantastic. I even would say that I do not like RTS at all, but I really like turn-based strategy games.

Have you tried Paradise Cracked? It's a lot like UFO, with several RPG features, too.

Well... It depends on where you stand If you pause BG it's still not an RPG with a turn-based combat.

Well yes thats true. But RPG is a Role Playing Game. It has no reference to the time dilation of the game.

However RTS is Real Time strategy. which says that the time is continuous and cannot be paused. If you can pause it then whats the difference between that and an ATB game?

That's true. However, CRPGs also can be devided into RPGs with real-time combat or turn-based combat. And in such opposite cases as, say, Lionheart and Temple of Elemental Evil, it might as well be in the name of the genre And, see, real-time RPGs without effective pause feature tend to be very hack'n'slash, just like some RTSs.

I think that the most important thing in TBS is actually the sequence of turns: Player1, Player2, Computer1, Computer2 etc. Only one player can act at a time. At *any* time. However, in RTSs in unpaused state everyone can do everything, which fact causes all the mess Pause itslef doesn't create any order or any sequence in actions of players. That's the difference, I think.

Exactly right, which is why I said ATB (Active Time Battle) and not TBS.

But since there is currently no such thing as an ATB strategy game (Or is there?) I guess its a moot point.

Its kind of a mixture between turn based and real time.

Basically each combatant has a speed, which determines the time it takes for you to make another move. You could be fighting someone who takes 7 seconds to attack, and you could take 6 seconds. When battle starts, you are obviously going first and they go second, but since you can attack a second quicker, eventually you will get to go two times before they get another attack.

Another key thing is that while you are making your move, the enemy is still counting down to their next attack. So if you dont choose quickly, they can attack you while you are making up your mind.

Usualy in these types of games you have a lot of spells/items that can affect time flow. E.g. You can cast "Slow" on someone to make them take longer for another turn. Although this wasted your turn in casting the spell, it gives you benefit in the future because since they are so slow, you will get more attacks than them.

For a good example of this, see the Final Fantasy games.

I am no sure if its ever been used in a pure strategy game though. I know it gets used a lot in console RPG's.

Edit: I think Advance Wars on the GBA used an partial ATB system. (The enemies waited for you to finish your turn on that)

Thank you I don't feel so stupid any longer.

Though, I can't think of an example of PC strategy to fit this criteria, too...

Ok, I agree that RTS with pause function is no longer real pure RTS. But I prefer such RTSs (because we can not call it turn based just because it has pause function).
I know that some games are designed to be pure RTS and pause button would destroy them. But good game made to work with pause function is better choice for me.
