Acctually .. the little "pauses" is scandisk doing its part.. there is a crack out there to stop scandisk and improve your gameplay by at least 15%, as well as having faster load/save times and no more of those pesky pauses.

I'm thinking about upgrading my KT133-A MB with 128 mb of PC133 to a
MB with the KT266-A chipset with 512mb of PC2100. I'm going to keep my 1.2 gig T-bird for the time being. Would I see even more of an improvement if I also go from using WIN 98SE to using WIN XP?

Another question I want to ask... Has anyone here went from using
SDRAM to using DDR RAM without also upgrading their CPU? I wonder how much of an improvement I'll actully see by going from 256MB of PC133 to
512MB of PC2100. Some of the benchmarks I've seen on the net showed very little performance difference between those types of RAM. Maybe I should wait untill I have enough money to buy a new MB, RAM, and CPU all at the same time.

BUT I DON'T WANNA WAIT THAT LONG!!!

I have 512MB PC2700 DDR RAM, and I still get pauses during the game, usually when a new area loads during my outdoor excursions. These are very brief, but still notable. Not a big deal, though.

PC2700 is DDR 333 right? I looked into getting a MB with a 333 chipset.
The only problem is that the FSB still runs at 266, so all the 333 MB's that are available right now actually offer very little performance increase over the 266 MB's. Untill AMD comes out with a CPU that supports a FSB higher than 266 you won't see a big speed improvement using DDR 333 and higher RAM.

By scandisk do you mean safedisc?

And I didn't notice any increase using it, of course it runs fairly well on my computer so there was no need..

More RAM doesn't necessarily = better performance

I have 1.5GB SDRAM and I still get the "little pauses". Yes I'm using the no-safedisk exe. 1.3ghz Ath. is pegged. Geforce3 is o'clocked to 180.
Runs ok (40-50fps indoors, 10-20fps outdoors) except for those stupid pauses (outdoors only).

I also have decent RAM (768MB), decent OS (W2K), the no-safe-disk "patch", and an Athlon; I also still get those annoying pauses, and I didn't notice before but they do indeed happen outside only. Has anyone gotten to the bottom of this?
