WARNING for my Gothic family |
|
http://www.rpgdot.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?p=1707164#1707164
I have no idea if Starforce will be used on G3, but Koch media is one of the game pubs that use it. _________________ Chris: Dad, what's the blow-hole for?

What, a protection scheme that installs a low level driver in my system
(without asking for my ascent) possibly impending performance, overall
system stabillity or even causing Hardware failure ?
Sure go ahead... I mean all this fuss for Sony BMG's mallware was
unsubstantiated right ? Lets just let the software publishers punish
as for buying their product... Lets let it become a trend... And lets
all forget about Fair use of the product we just bought...
I REALLY hope this doesnt happen (no indication that it will anyway).
I would not install this kind of software on my 3000+ euro PC (that
incidentally I will not be using to play games only and risking HW
damage or data loss is simply not an option, sorry) or any PC for that
matter (money doesnt grow on trees and my time is always limited
to spend reinstalling windows just because mallware accompanying a
game destroyed my carefully tuned installation).
Anyway, my 2 cents... |

I really hope they don't use StarForce. If they do, I will not be buying it.

I will buy it. I must buy it. I think I would risk junking my computer for my next Gothic fix.
Sorry to say so, but its true. I also hope they don't have it, but also hope the hype around it is overblown.
Getting ready to play G1 and G2-NoTR again - as a mage this time. |

I played PoP3, it had SF and it didn't f*ck up my computer, atleast not that I'm aware of.
Kinda pointless tho, no matter how strong CD-protections they invent, there will always be atleast one solid method to get games to work without the CD and it's the same with SF. I'm just saying that the honest customers are the ones screwed over and all the downloaders will get the games to work anyway.
Doesn't matter what protection G3 has, there's no way I'm not buying it. |

I'm in agreement with Kriksa regarding who really suffers from copy protections.
As much as I love Gothic 1 & 2 and have been looking forward to 3, I won't be buying it if it comes out with StarForce. I tried a game with it once and had MAJOR problems. Ended up having to do a system restore from a really old backup in order to get things working right again. Took me 30 + hours to reinstall stuff. It really bites because I'd planned to get POP3 and X3 until I found out they had SF.
Seriously though, if you ever think of installing a game with this protection make a new restore point or update your backup files before you do it. It's messed up a lot of systems for a lot of people. |

Koch Media usually uses Starforce on their premium products, so it´s rather likely G3 will have it.
Please spare us personal statements whether or not you will buy the game. I can assure you nobody gives a shit. It´s your own decision - feel free to make it silently. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

This sounds frustirating. I wouldn't risk my PC to get the enjoyment of a game. As we all know, no matter what happens, pirates will get to the game, why are they even putting those programs on eh.. _________________

well since I already preordered gothic 3 it's a moot point really, although ,I might get a pirate version in addition, just so my DVD burner won't die, even though it cost like a game these days. _________________ "We're still flying"

This is horrible news.
One thing that could really hurt G3, not of it's own devices.
Uggh, not sure if I will be able to play one of my favorite games, sad, sad day.
The problems that this uses the highest level of security on your comupter which is the level that all Kernel activity takes place.
If any kind of conflict takes place with Anitviruses for example you could easily lose your main partition (where the Kernel is located) or worst whole drive.
If you are going to use Starforce games at the very least make sure you back up all your important info on CDs/DvDs and consider using a Ghost program, FIRST.
Thanks for the warning, Uriziel. |

This is no wise decision from Jowood. They do only alienate their fanbase, that's all.
All i can say about Starforce is something a wise guy did already say some time ago:
I never minded piracy. Anyone who minds about piracy is full of shit. Anyone who pirates your game wasn’t going to buy it anyway! -Warren Spector
