is it possible to get the heavy armor without having the medium armor? if so, where and when?

If you are a merc you can get it from Bennet (he is the Merc's smith) when you return from Xardas' secret rooms in the Monastery basement after reading the Almanac.
You will be able to tell Bennet how to make it.

when will you "learn" about these secret rooms? i dont know how many armour upgrades i have left but im about to enter 4 chapter and have the first dragon hunter armour.. its a while before this i presume?
by the way.. the book "spirit of the wine" found in the basement.. what can i do with it? |
