| Graphics problem - Textures are flickering and disappearing |

Hi there
I'm currently running a Geforce 6800 GT with Windows 2k, and the 61.77 drivers. I had to reinstall Windows recently due to an 'unfortunate incident', but since then I've been experiencing a graphical problem with Gothic II. When moving around, the graphics flicker intermittently, with pale blue chunks replacing the textures, and occasionally large flashes of the green plant textures obscure large chunks of the screen. I've tried a few different drivers, but with no luck. Does anyone know what might be causing this? |

You´re probably the first one with 6800 GT in this forum. Opening threads in hardware related forums will give you better chances to find the solution, I guess.
Do I understand you correctly that G2 did run correctly before you had to reinstall windows?
Did you try the graphics card compatibility options in the gothic.ini? They´re for older cards, but who knows...

It's probably something with the NVidia drivers. I use a GeForce 5700 and updated to 66.93 a while ago. About two weeks ago I took Gothic2 from the shelves and started playing again. I encountered exactly the same problem.
I got back to the 56.72 driver I had still in a map on my harddisk and that solved the problem. You could try switching to an older driver.

The Nvidia 61.77 drivers fpr W2k are not known for their outstanding quality

Hi everyone!
I have similar problem in G2 with Geforce namely 6800 Ultra. I've got Force Ware 71.24 by VStudios on W2K SP4 with DX9.0c. Right in the beginning in Xadras tower when I turn around to leave "pentogram" room, I can see through the walls and textures start to smudge and flicker. When I get outside it's even worse - can see through trees and mountains, ground dissapears completely - run on the sky.
I removed DX9.0c and installed 8.1b - nothing. Will try Force Ware 56.72 (it doesn't support NV40 though).
On another partition I've got Win98SE, DX8.1b and 66.94 - different problem. Exremely slow. Slideshow. It's funny, but my old Radeon 9700pro wasn't slowing like this. I had playable FPS at 300% distance.

Sounds like an incompatibility with the new GeForce cards. I guess I´ll find it out soon. I just bought a PNY 6600GT with 40% discount.

I feel ashamed... I ran out of geek juice... I succumb to the simpliest and ugliest solution: Pulling out my new shiny 6800 Ultra, and putting back good ol' 9700Pro. I'm sorry NV40... I'm sorry nVidia drivers... You somewhat, what the word I'm looking here, suck?
Did fresh Win2K install in the following order:
0. format c: /q
1. Install Win2K
2. Install SP4
3. Install System drivers (nForce 2 400 Ultra)
4. Install Force Ware 56.72
5. Win2K won't boot (56.72 of course doesn't support GF6 series)
6. Start Win2K in safe mode
7. Install DX 8.1B
8. Win2K won't boot
9. Start Win2K in safe mode
10. Remove Force Ware 56.72, Reboot
11. Install Force Ware 66.93
12. Win2K is alive!!! Yeah!
13. Install Gothic 2
14. In it's ugliness this bug is actually beatiful... It's 11 AM and I didn't take hit of LSD yet... But wait! Textures smudge... They dance and flicker... And I can see through the walls! I ran outside excited, because... I can fly! Woopee! Yeah! I'm God, I'm God!!! Played with every Gothic.INI z-buffer setting imaginable. Shot down fast writes. Turned off all eye candy. Nothing...
15. IT SUCKS BIG TIME actually. HL2 1024x768x32x85 with 2xAA 2xFAA at 80+FPS. Chronicles of Riddick HL2 1024x768x32x85 with 2xAA 2xFAA at 60+FPS... And my beloved Gothic2 is no go. Dead. No more. Ceased to be. Not of the world of living.
If someone finds soltion, please post it, OK? I'm going back in time to 2002. When the star of 9700Pro has risen.

Well, 61.77 are somewhat playable. No texture smudging and seeing through. But, flickering is still there. After a while your eyes get tired. Playing with Gothic.ini didn't improve things.
My config:
- Win2000 SP4
- DX9.0c
- Official Force Ware 61.77
- eVGA 6800 Ultra
- Giga-Byte 7NNXP mobo
- Barton XP2500+ OCed to 2.2Ghz (XP3200+)
- 1Gb (2x512) DDR400 Centon in Dual Channel
- LG DVD |

How your 6600GT behaves is G2? Which drivers are you using? I'm currently back to 9700Pro on Omega 4.12 based drivers with everything maxed out, 2xAniso, NPC and viewing distance at 200% I get 40-50FPS in open space, 100-140FPS inside and 30FPS in the city with viewing distance at 100%. 6800Ultra was much smoother at 300% with 2xAA and 2xAniso...

Thanks a bunch for suggestion about 66.93 and 70.41. I currently run 66.93 which is way more playable even though every 10-20 sec there is an occasional flash. FPS are surprisingly low, a bit lower than my 9700Pro with exact IQ settings.

i dunno if this might help but there are some twaek in the gothic2.INI file
if i recall i saw somethign about nvidea and flickering , it was for older card of course but maybe if you enable/diseable i dunno
just tought id suggest that in case

Heat?
Largest problem with all cards..not only cards...but ram..CPUs..even some sound cards...is heat.

Heat is unlikely. Then the whole PC would freeze or reboot.

This helps to get the problem under control in the mentioned driver revisions, but there is still no fix. Some people have problems, others can use GeForce 6 cards without the slightest problem.

Not necessarily..
Heat or ailing card fan can cause smearing or bleeding and other graphical problems.You may not even notice until you are playing a game
Todays cards are massive heat producers...ever touch one when it's going? Ever touch one that the fan was going out on? 3rd degree burns...
Heat from the card affects all pc hardware...especially ram. which can cause slow downs ..hiccups...etc
Does not mean heat will cause the computer to crash..unless it's the processer. I know from experience...
Since most hardware is stacked right below the video card...the heat can and does affect sound cards..internet cards..
Most off the shelf comps are no where kept cool enough..
I keep mine at 51 c constant...water jacket and many fans...my( heavily modified) Dell looks like a Frankenstein monster.
But if his problems are G2 only..then it's just G2
