After looking over the "top 10 RPGs" thread, it looks like Ultima 7 was a real gem. So, I've got a couple questions:

1) would someone give me a quick summary of what it's like? (1st person/3rd person--- single character/party--- story ala Planescape/hack-n-slash questing ala M&M/clickfest ala Diablo--- etc.

2) EBGames has a pack that includes the Ultima Collection. Is that collection adequate and will it run on a semi-modern rig?

Other than that, I don't have any questions.

Yes, it was a gem.

Top down isometric view. The graphics are still descent today, although slightly cartoony. (But hey, it's an old game.) Basically in this one the Avatar is tracking down a group of murderers who are working for an all-powerful distructive villian who wants to enter the world and take it over. You have a party of followers. Though you should be good, or they will leave you. A huge world to explore with tons of NPCs with full dialogs. No real spoken speech though. It definately doesn't have to be linear if you don't want it to be. I spent months finding all the hidden stuff. I love that Hoe of Destruction and the demon possessed sword! It's definately quest and story driven. And who doesn't like a game where you get to ride a magic carpet?

The 9 seperate games on the Ultima Collection CD are definately worth it. Although you'll have to dig out your old cluncker PC to play these. Or pick one up at a flee market. These are DOS based only games. (With the exception of Ultima 9) There is a project in the works to get Ultima 7 and Serpent Isle to run in a Windows environment though. It's called Exult. I think they recently released a beta. You can find their website here. I've been toying with the idea of playing it again. Hmm... perhaps I'll download the Exult software.
