Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion movie (21min, 6 parts) at official
   

Those of you who haven't seen the E3 movie of Oblivion can now download it in 6 part at the <a href="http://www.elderscrolls.com/downloads/media_movies.htm" target="_blank">download section</a> of the official site. The movie basically shows a scene from the prison where the game starts, some impressions from the woods and an elven ruin, stealth gameplay, a dungeon and some traps, a city, NPC behaviour based on the Radiant AI and a battle scene from a devastated city. Some very cool stuff in there, although it's somewhat older (it was compiled for internal presentations at E3, as far as I know and later on leaked - and can be found in a hires edition on the cover DVD of a Xbox magazine as well). All in all, I think it gives a nice impression of what to expect from this game, which is still slated for a "holiday 2005" release (and rumored to be in time for the Xbox 360 release or close to that date *g*).

The dialogue is dreadful. That Bard!

"Hello. What can a humble Bard do for you, in these... troubled times"

The cliched simplicity of the dialogue is not helped one bit by the overwrought voice acting. And that guy will be voicing every male of that race for the entire game! Not to mention the English-voiced female guard leading the Emperor at the start has an upper-class accent that just doesn't sound right, let alone being delivered in an unnatural way.

Not very promising at all I'm afraid.

The dialogue was all pre-recorded. It's not going to change. What you hear in that video is what you'll be getting.

The dialogue for the MAIN actors was prerecorded. The rest hasn't been written in stone when the E3 demo was made. So this might change - it doesn't have to, but it might.

I doubt that, Rendie, but we shall see.

Anyway, if the dialogue is bad, I suppose that as good role-players we can just pretend it's different.

Err - roleplaying doesn't make you dumb - just as consoles don't make you dumb

Voice acting is a matter of taste, most of the time.

I remember Wizardry 8 - that was crap dialogue all over the place, and it didn't bother me a lot, since the game was fun. On the other hand, a couple of games come to my mind where the dialogue should have been written instead

50 hours recorded dialogue. 10 races, 2 genders. Leaves 2.5 hours of spoken dialogue per race and gender. Some WILL have to be crap.

Ah, and about "one man does all dialogue for a race": Dunno if you are in studios a lot. I am, it's my job. You can do a lot with pitching, shifting and filtering. If the one person is an actor (and THAT's the important thing), I wouldn't worry. It's silly to expect a unique voice for each and every of those 1500 NPCs, and compromises will have to be made.

Let's wait and see. For me, voice acting in Morrowind was slightly above par, and the only thing I hated were the repetetive phrases. With 50 hours of recording, I am quite sure their will be less

Good point about altering the voices, I hope that's used a lot. And I agree about Morrowind's voice acting, what was there was very good.

You'd have to agree though that the snippet we heard on that E3 video is pretty awful - both in content and in voice acting. The female guard at the beginning sounds affected and unnatural, and way too upper-class for a prison guard. The Bard - enough said.

Well, I guess we'll find out in, wait - a few more months!

The female in the opening sequence wasn't a prison guard, she was a Blade - one of the Emperor's personal bodyguards/spies. But affected and unnatural her voiceacting indeed was.

Just wait for the player-made quest mods to come out, their voice-acting (or utter silence) will make this look good.
