The Virtual disk file system. |
|
That little loading this is mad annoying...always when i reboot my pc and start up gothic 2 it's gonna load that Disk file thing again, and it easily takes up to probably one minute...i've checked this out...in the system folder of GII, this is the file who does that
Vdfs32e.exe -VDFS Init tool-Piranha Bytes
So i've copied this file to a different folder not in Gothic II folder and loaded up GII, but now the gothic II is just there waiting to start, exactly the same amount of time with the init tool...can this be disabled? it's annoying, Gothic never needed this... _________________ All for respect, all for the bread

Copy the file back and live with it for now. Some people had similar problems on the German v1.30. There was some unofficial tool which fixed it in 90+% of the cases. _________________ Webmaster GothicDot |

Would you like to introduce this unofficial tool, please? It may be helpful for some of us, both in the present and future.
Thanks. |

I don't have G2, but I can tell you that PB packaged G1 in a format called VDFS. This is probably what you're seeing now. I can't help you with performace issues, but VDFS is nothing external to Gothic. If that helps at all |

It is probably required. This virtual file system thingy is most likely used by PB to index into the large data files that ship with the game. Lots of individual bits of content like voice files, text, graphics, etc. are most likely packed into one large file. This makes installation/distribution less error-prone and also makes accessing game data more efficient.
The VDFS allows the developers to access these game resources like files in a real file system and hides the details of how they are physically stored in the big "blob" files that are actually on your hard disk.
Well.. that's my best guess. _________________ All shall hear the words of Karras...the words of Karras |

I got that virtual file thingey as well. I didn't get it in g1 however (probably because at the time of g1 my pc was around the high end, sigh, technology sucks, in a good way). _________________

Try moving the file vdfs.exe from your Gothic System folder and putting it somewhere else (e.g the root directory). This worked for me. Now Gothic 2 loads extremely quickly.
Prior to that I was getting the vdfs thing running every time I ran Gothic 2, and the game was taking four and a half minutes to load. Now I`m up and running in less than a minute (including loading save game). |

I ran the vdfs32e.exe file at the .\Gothic II folder, and the program displays an error dialog: "The application has failed to start because Vdfs32e.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem."
So, should I re-install the game in an attempt to fix this problem?

Well, I should have mentioned it: UT becomes (very quickly) inconvenient if one (YOU) doesn't read the manual:)

... but it'll become (very quickly) convenient once it works properly.
Anyways, thanks for your help. No need to wait for another %$# 20 minutes to process those VDFS stuff. |
