I am level 9 with fighter ninja rogue priest mage ranger
I would like to consider changing one of my characters to a magic user but is a level one magic user worth it at this stage |

I am not "fan" of changing professions in Wiz8.
However you can find it useful and interesting. You should know that skills that belongs to first proffesion and do not belong to second one will be "locked forever".
So my opinion is: stay with what you have and make it stronger and stronger... But you do need to obey my opinions .

Plenty of discussions here about the drawbacks of class changing. Not having done it, I won't comment further.
You have a runnable party already that's pretty balanced. There's no "right' party. But having said that, if you were going to make a change, I have some observations:
1) You say you want a "magic user". Does this mean a second mage? A second mage might give you more offensive spell firepower, but otherwise adds nothing since you already have a pure mage.
2) You cover 3 of 4 spell realms (priest, mage & 2 alchemists). Are you looking for a psionic (psionic or monk)? It would add more spells, but no spells are critical. There's no point in the game where you must have a certain spell.
3) One possibility would be to change your thief. You have 3 strong fighers, and your ninja could perform your thieving skills with appropriate training. Of course, that comes with a price - you couldn't develop your ninja as much in other ways.
4) You can add up to two NPCs at a time, who may fill in skills you are missing. For class changing you really need to use classes that compliment each others skills so that you don't end up with a bunch of locked skills.
The best class for this is the Alchemist, for several reasons.
First, the alchemist can max out the alchemy skill by mixing potions very early.
Second, there are more hybrid classes that use alchemy as their magic type than any other magic class which makes it easier to change class without losing any of your magic skills. (ranger, ninja)
Third, you will be able to use higher level spells at earlier levels as a hybrid if you spent a good amount of time as an alchemist first maxing your skills.
Other 'good' class switches are Priest, mage, psionic to a bishop. Fighter to samurai, ninja, monk, ranger.
Anyway, I'm sure you get the point. If your going to switch classes don't switch anyone that is a Hybrid already because you will most likely lose out on skills that get locked. And always go from a "pure" class to a hybrid that uses the skills of the original class in order to make a more effective character.

Actually, most folks agree that the best group for class changes is the "lockpick bunch"- rogue, bard, and gadgeteer. Those three use lots of similar skills, and require similar ability scores. Additionally, each one only has one main skill to boost that the others are missing (pickpocket, music, and engineering respectively), so you can bring the new class along pretty quickly. _________________ =Proud Member of the Non-Flamers Guild=

I have a question concerning class changing...
if I make a mage a cleric for the first level to learn "bless" and "heal wounds" will these spells increase?
well the divine realm would go up through other wizardry spells there
but divinity will stay low, will my mage be able to cast power 7 healing spell?? (very important ...at least 3 chars should have healing) |

Ok, well have a read though the article I mentioned in my last posting, but basically if by Cleric you mean Priest then following will occur;
At level 1, your Priest would have the ability to learn (in no particular order), Light, Bless, Make Wounds, Charm, Paralyze, Stamina, Heal Wounds, and has a 25% bonus on his/her Divinity skill.
Then at Level 2, you were to profession change this character into a Mage (I'll assume all the profession requirements are met), then the character loses their 25% bonus in Divinity, gains a 25% bonus to their Wizardry skill, can no longer add or gain points in their Divinity skill but can now add/gain points in Wizardry, but cannot learn any new Divinity-based spells (unless of course the spell is also in the Wizardry realm).
It's also worth pointing out, any skill picks "left over" in a profession also get "locked" away unless you pick a profession that uses the same Mastery realm or return to that profession later.
But to answer your question simply, yes you could start a character as a Priest, then learn any or all of the level 1 spells from spell books (before leveling up), and then become a Mage or some other profession, whether it's a good idea or not, really doesn't come into it, they are YOUR characters and YOU can decide how you want to play the game, Wiz8 is so well balenced there are near-even amounts of advantages and disadvantages to just about everything you do.

I would like to point out:
Nothing is "locked away", you can always change back. Some skills you can learn only as a given class may also still apply to the other classes. A Mage, for example, will still have 100% come up on the chest-trap window if she had practised up to that as a Bard, or whatever. That's one of the reasons i change class a lot. The party i'm playing most now has all taken a one-level break to get Stealth to 100. (gets 10 AC) 2 of them, a Gad and a Bard, will change to Fighter around L11. This way they get the protective spells needed for survival in some places, and get Berzerk going nicely by the time they need it. Note, though, i have only 3 in this party, so their changing isn't affected as much by the XP cost of higher levels. They're also the cheapest classes, and changing early enough that their Att/Round will build back up right away.
I'm disregarding the Omnigun, for those curious, and using Bow, so when i'm a Fighter, i'll be right on top of the Tripleshooter. |
